I have been having an ungoing problem with my Edge/GPRS connection for some time - it never really has been a major problem but its about time I try and fix this.

I am on 2.1 pwned to work in NZ - I have tried unlockit.co.nz to no avail.

The problem: My edge connection has a mind of its own, it works sometimes, and doesnt work the majority of the other. The strange thing, I can 100% always connect to my work exchange server to access emails - yet anything else on the phone that tries to access the internet will fail.

No problems with WiFi, tried resetting network settings etc.

Any ideas?

Why does my email work and nothing else?

Are you in New Zealand?

There are no EDGE connections available here. Just GPRS (for EDGE/GPRS handsets) which is painfully slow. Wouldn't surprise me if modern applications gave up on a bad GPRS connection with a timeout.

Yes - in NZ.

Sorry, I should have worded it as GPRS, too used to American forums I guess.

Well I work and live in central Auckland, I cant imagine there should be any problem with a poor GPRS signal.. Especially if I never have problems with accessing email regardless of where I am (even remote-ish places up north with a flicker of cell signal).

Any other thoughts as to why email is fine yet noe Safari or Maps etc?

Danegar, from that sentence it sounds like you think GPRS and EDGE are the same technology called different things in NZ and the US. That's not the case. GPRS is much slower than EDGE, in fact it is barely faster than dialup.

what APN are you using?

Have you tried turning 3G on and off to see if there is any difference?

VPN is also off?

Thanks Steve - I realise this.

@Dan - I am using a Gen 1, so no 3g option.

At the moment the APN I am using is www.vodafone.net.nz - though I also have tried blank aswell. Both work at different times, but like I said the majority of the time it fails.. At the moment it is working, yet sitting at the exact same place with the same settings yesterday it was not...

Any other theories?

Thanks for your help guys.
