Hi all
I just got an iphone on the weekend. I have downloaded the latest itunes and the remote application in the free apps. Unless i connect the ipnoe to the usb i can't get itunes to reconise the device. I read a previous post about the fire wall etc .I have tried allowing wireless devices in the exceptions list on windows firewall but nothingso i tried switching off the fire wall and still nothing. I have tried swithcing the wifi on and off on the iphone and searching thenetwork centre but can't see the phone. I can access the internet no problem on the phone.
DetailsIphone 16gb: not jailbroken running latest version 2.1 Laptop is an acer on wireless N running vista home premium with windows firewall and avast anti virus.
The wireless router/modem is a linksys wag160n. I had a look in the settings screen for the router but couldn't see anything that looked like it would make a difference.
ANy suggestions greatly received.
As an aside I am pretty pleased with my early christmas present but was disappointed with the griffin leather elan cover i bought at the new magnum mac store yesterday. I put my sim card in the phone this morning and discoverd whenever i used the phone function  the screen went black but it didn't switch back on after i took the phone away from my ear. Did a couple of googles and turns out some covers interfere with the proximity sensor. You would think a company like griffin would test these first . There wasn't anything on the package to say it wouldn't work on a 3g.
Will try to take back tomorrow and see what they say

The remote control application uses Rendezvous/Bonjour (mDNS) to find the laptop.  Since this protocol is a broadcast/multicast protocol, routers will tend to filter it out.  In other words, if the PC is on the wired network, and the phone is on the wireless network, you are likely to have problems.

Of course, this depends on how your own network is set up, it may work for some people.

Is that the same or different wireless routers?

Since they are on different networks (G vs N), it is likely that the protocol is being filtered out by the router itself - it has nothing to do with the
settings on the PC.

To test it, connect them to the same wireless network, it is more likely to work then.

Another way, would be to connect the PC to a wired network, and test using a second PC and any of the other itunes remote control applications out there.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, that's all I know. :)
