AND it is that time again. Apple is holding an event Nov 10th 1000 PDT (NZ 0600 Wed 11th) This will be an online digital event labelled: One more thing.

Expected

  • Apple's first Silicon Mac (iMac or laptop) with an Arm-based chip which they have stated would be released prior to the end of year
  • Over the ear headphones
  • AirTags

Maybe

  • Apple TV box with redesigned remote (Oh please please)
  • Apple Game control

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Yeah exciting - based on the invite and the little AR thingy you can download, I'd say it's a laptop. The way it animates looks like a laptop lid opening.

I don't really get much use out of my personal laptop these days, and am in two minds about maybe replacing it with an iPad, but I'll be keenly watching to see what's released at the November event and where Apple go with their own silicon in Macs.

The 27inch iMacs only got a spruce up in August, can't see the transition happening till next year for them

I will be interested to see where they go with the headphones. Apple will need to have something unique to enter such a crowded market, especially with Sonos rumoured to be releasing something soon.

It makes me wonder if they might eventually retire the Beats brand.

I doubt it. They target very different market segments.

You're probably right. Beats seems to target younger and less discerning audio consumers, so hopefully that might indicate that the Apple branded headphones will go for a more mature sound signature.

I'm really interested to see what comes out - agree a small, light MacBook with ARM allowing for improved speed and battery life would be great.

This 2015 MBP I type on now is well past it's prime and there is (someone else's) money in the budget! It's had a tough life with no shortage of travel and gets run 10km bouncing along in my backpack around the hills of Dunedin on my way home most weeks. I would like small, light and efficient. It offsets my large, slow and hungry ;-)

I did actually buy a new MBA 13" earlier this year with max processor and RAM. It was lovely for most normal tasks but Zoom and Teams killed the processor - ran hot, fans on full, couldn't hear well as a result - and given how much of my life now has to happen in Teams or Zoom, it had to go back for a refund (all accomplished without Apple batting an eye).

The A12 chip in the trial Minis runs faster than the MBA. The putative new laptop will run an A14 iPad Pro chip and has a fair chance of zipping along. But it's only really any use if MS Teams runs on it without it melting - MS have compiled ARM versions of Office already so hopefully there is hope. I don't need x86 compatibility for VMWare or Parallels, and otherwise sadly these days I run Office 365 and Citrix plus a few everyday apps from Apple (Keynote mostly) so nothing too funky.

So I'm looking forward to next week!

It's definetly an interesting move, and if anyone can break the x86 dominance it will be this crowd. But of course what will matter, as it always does, is software support. having an interpret layer like they did with motorola to powerpc to intel is a good thing.

And if the main software vendors are continuing their move towards CPU independant code... well.... intel should have been more paranoid...

Appears the “NZ” Apple tax has been well and truly applied.

Are you looking at any product in particular? For example, the low-end Mini is $699 + tax in the US and US$712 + GST in NZ. The top-end MBP is $1499 vs $1573 which is a little more, but still not a huge difference.

NZ Apple website pricing has now been changed. When I looked this morning the new 13” MacBook Pro was $3299 now listed at $2299. I suspect someone hit the wrong key.

I will be watching with interest how the new Apple silicon works out. Certainly wont be jumping in after experiencing the now time of antiquity shift from their old silicon to Intel. My 2017 iMac 27" will need replacing and I would love to ditch my last remaining windows machine (Surface Laptop 3) for a MacBook. I will probably hold out until next year.

I have knocked around the idea for a while now of when my iMac is replaced is moving to an Mac Mini and the new mini's on paper make that more of an attractive idea. I am more likely just to have a MacBook docked to a monitor and use my Linux machine as my only desktop.

My iMac Pro has plenty of ability to last me a few more years.

I might flick the iPad Pro and get the new Air once I see since some reviews etc. it would be much more use to me than an iPad.
