Yesterday Mrs Duck took a tumble while running and broke her iPhone8.  It appears to still be working fine as she is hearing message notifications and the music was still playing after she fell, but the screen is black (not cracked, but black).

The battery on it has been hopeless for a while and she'd planned to upgrade sometime soon anyway, so today we'll head out and grab an iPhone 13.

Normally when we've got a new iPhone or Macbook we migrate everything over from the old one to the new one by holding them close together and letting apple do their magic.  But with the screen not working we don't know how to do this, from memory you had to confirm doing it on the old iPhone.  Is it possible to still do this?

I think we can do a backup of the old phone via iTunes and then restore it from there, but ideally we'd like the magic update if that is still possible.

If iCloud is backed up automatically you can restore from it.

You might be right that it needs the screen to confirm it....I trust you've tried?  and seen how far your can get.

My understanding is it doesn't bring over things like app credentials etc, she will need to sign in across everything [or am i wrong?].  Not the end of the world, but not ideal

The screen needs to be working to do phone to phone.

Assuming she was using Touch ID (and therefore can unlock the broken phone) your best bet will be to do an encrypted backup/restore to iTunes (or Finder if you've got a newer Mac) - you need to use the encrypted option to bring over credentials. She will probably still get asked to log in to some apps but that would have been the case either way.

Failing that an iCloud restore will be the only other option.

Unfortunately couldn't get this to work, best guess is the phone is asking if she wants to trust the computer but we cannot see the prompt.

Did it via iCloud, now she's going to have to get her credentials set up  ugggghhh.

It's a good time to set up a password manager, then. Have a look at Bitwarden/Lastpass/1Password.

Ooooh yeah I forgot about that part, if the phone hadn’t been backed up to that computer before then that would have been it.

Hopefully it’s not too painful to get her back up and running!
