I upgraded the YT Music app the other day, and now it won't play music unless the app is active (i.e. no background play).  I've done the usual - signed out and back in, force quit the app, restarted the phone, and confirmed I have YouTube Premium.  It appears to be a bug in the app, which I've reported to YouTube, but I'm interested if anyone else has experienced this problem (acknowledging I'm probably one of the very few using YT Music instead of Spotify).

I just upgraded to version 4.52.2

Still playing in background, can even put phone in standby and keeps playing.

I’m on iOS 14.8 though, haven’t gone to 15 yet.

Has the iOS Background Apps setting for it changed?

Very strange then.  I'm on version 4.52 as well, running iOS14.8.1 (have held off on iOS15 for now), and Background Refresh is still on.

Is there a (simple) way to roll back to an earlier version of the app?

That appears to have done the trick.  Obviously too much clink had accumulated in the extruminator and had to decossified before the music data could pass unobstructed through the zoobles. :)
