This happened on. Oth my iPhone and iPad today, both suddenly asked for outlook password for my hotmail account (I use the iOS mail app) and when I then enter it I get the error saying it can’t authenticate the account.
I updated the iPhone to the latest iOS after this occurred and still have the same issue.

anyone else having similar issues?

No issues for me with a hotmail.com and an office 365 for business one.

if it's IMAP I would remove and re-add the accounts. fixes all, nice and quick. Don't do it if you don't know your password though.

This thread from the end of last year indicates that logging into hotmail (Outlook.live.com) via the web might solve the problem,

Seemed to flush out an authentication problem similar to what you describe

We frequently get issues with office365 authentication/entering new password for users using the iOS Mail app that sound similar to this. I would think consumer Hotmail uses the same or similar authentication.

A couple of tricks to try:

  • Try clearing the Safari browser cache/storage and then try re-entering your password. Don't have the exact procedure as I don't have an iPhone but think it is Settings -> Safari -> Clear Cache or similar.
  • Try using another browser as your default browser. Download Chrome or Edge and set one of those as your default browser. Then try authenticating again. Again, not sure where the setting to set it as default is.

Thanks for the replies, logging in via a browser worked but it may have been timed perfectly with the outlook outages as mentioned above.

cheers all
