Has something changed in the Apple/iPhone environment recently in regards to phones attached to accounts ?

I've been sent two iPhones for work to be reset and given to new users.

Previous users have removed the phones from their accounts and done factory reset - yet both phones ask for passcodes yet neither user put one in.

One does mention its still attached to a particular account altho the user swears it was removed but the other just asks for passcode with nothing else.

Was Find my turned off before the accounts were removed and factory reset?

Also has the phones had any passcode previously? You're going to have to hunt those ask for those passcodes.

These phones are behind iCloud activation lock hence you're getting what you're seeing me thinks.

Found it.... appears when you factory reset an iPhone now after removing from your account, it puts a default PIN code on them of 000000.

Never come across that before.

It's a bit difficult to think your Apple ID is cleared from your iDevice & get it wrong. The device wont delete the user data & reset to factory fresh without the Apple ID password being entered (or the screen lock code on iOS 15).

If the device is at the Hello screen & requires Apple ID input then it's been DFU mode reset without the Apple ID signed out.

Check here , input the serial or IMEI & get back lots of detail including FMI status.

Really? Not on iPads anyway. I've just reset pre-owned iPad 8th & iPad Pro 1st gen, both updated to iOS 15.3 & didn't get the 000000 passcode requirement.

I rarely touch iDevices, but now had two do this - iPhone XR, and another iPhone (dunno which model). Both on latest iOS.

I initially went "grrrrr" at the previous owners but they gave me their passcodes to no avail. Only found the 000000 trick via another site with people having issues getting into reset phones.
