Ive had this problem for over three months now, ive spent days trying to connect my 1st gen iphone 2.02 to my laptop
or itunes8. I believe i have exhausted every option. I am willing to lose all my contacts, photos etc as  i have a adequate backup.
Any advice?

and yes I have tried other usb ports, resets, pc's, mac's, cables.....

Cheers

EDIT:
Ok it was the connector inside iphone, OMNITECH in henderson replaced connector/ home button/ mic/ speakers (one unit)
They did a great job, upgrading to 2.2 with their own firmware (great)
No problems and running like a dream!
Big thanks to AARONA for his help solving this one!

Hi mate.

So are you saying that the PC will not recognise it?

You say you've been having these problems for 3 months now.. I take it charging it still works?

Have you checked the device manager to see if it shows up as being connected?

Oh well hello, Aaron! :P

Okay, well, you could try this.. To me it sounds as though theres something wrong with the unit itself, however, just to make things clearer to us; try enabling the Apple Mobile Device Driver in services

click here to follow the process for Windows, or here for Mac OS X.

Hopefully this will help..

If it does not, let me know, i'll try think of something else to try.

Unfortunately, I am running a little low on time this afternoon, but will try get back to you around 4ish :)

Have a good afternoon, and good luck!

Try plugging it into another computer and see if it is recognised. At least then you will know if the iphone is faulty or not.

Yeah..

My advise from here would be to uninstall itunes completely off your computer. so if it asks you to reboot, reboot.

if it asks you to jump up and down 20 times, do that also!

and then install it (don't just do repair, remove it then install it)

hopefully this should at least give you itunes functionality back

I must have uninstalled itunes 10x, used all different versions
I guess i'll try again, and google how to COMPLETELY remove it first!
Then maybe see if iphone is detected without itunes installed!
Thanks i'll get back, appreciate your help

Not a problem, I know what it's like when something doesnt work the way it was intended, and I know how much it annoys me also :P

Failing that, if it doesnt work on YOUR pc, maybe you should try using it on your flatmates laptop if thats okay with them?

While not ideal, it may hopefully bring you some answers.

Look forward to hearing your results!

Cheers

nokia 3310??! Talk about stepping back in time :P

It seems weird that it does recognize on that laptop, whereas not on any of the other computers etc. that you have tried.

to me it sounds like the connection is bust (on the iPhone itself) when you plugged it into your computer, did you try giggling the cable around closer to the iPhone?

Also, another thing I've had happen to me, was when i plugged something into a USB port on my old computer (well, old as in used to have) my USB device stopped working (it was a bluetooth dongle), and ever since then, it just wouldn't work! I know it was the USB port to blame though, because I had broken it the week before and forgot that I shouldn't have used it (DUH!?)

All I could think of that happened to my device was that some jolt of power (excuse the bad description) passed back to the device and short-circuited it or something similar.

Hi!
Yep, i have been busy upgrading, uninstalling, downgrading, reinstalling. Nothing! My friend and I spent hours yesterday trying to figure it out. Still detects as "apple iphone" on his old xp laptop. Im thinking its a waste of time, especiaslly when the geniuses at the mac store just shrugged and looked blankly at me hahaha.
I can SSH into it, but I dont think think that can help, if only i could restore.............
