I want an mp3 player with bluetooth, and GPS would be nice

So the iPhone looks good.

Can it be used without a sim card present? - I dont want / cant afford the phone functionality

You could ... but whats the point? Get a iTouch instead.

GPS won't work without a dataplan and it doesn't have stereo bluetooth.

Really, any idea why it needs one?

All I need is position information from the GPS - I'm not loooking for any mapping , google earth or similar

You're joking, right? mono only?

Just to answer your questions;

Bluetooth does not do A2DP (Bluetooth is only used for a Bluetooth enabled headsets - for phone calls)

If you require GPS, you can download a program from the App Store that tells you your cordinates without having to have a data plan.

The phone functionality, well, you can use Prepay or whatever vodafone plan you are on now.(from what i've seen, correct me if im wrong anyone?)
But i've used prepay and on account SIM's without a hitch.

However,
From the information you've provided, it sounds as though you should just get an iPod Touch. Seems more fitting and less expensive.

Hope this helps :)
