I have the new iPad Air (M3) and use it with an external monitor using stage manager.
I use it with the Magic Keyboard, a Dock case Explorer hub (supports 4k and 8k out with pass-through charging) and a Logitech Mx 3s Bluetooth mouse.
I found using the track pad on the keyboard - I could not scroll on apps on the second monitor, but found the scroll wheel on the mouse worked ok, although it needed to be inverted.
stage manager can be a little bit quirky.
At some stage, am thinking of trying it with an Asus Zen-screen portable monitor.
99% of the time though I find I just use the iPad in traditional mode (I.e. I hold it). I only use the second monitor when doing something like editing video.

A well spec'd iPad Pro costs enough - I'd expect it to be able to do what a Mac does!
When the heck are they going to have multi windows on an iphone. It is the one thing that affects it's usability. The ipads multi apps has been flawed ever since it came out and they have had some improvements, but it was still very restrictive and not intuitive. This updates just proves it and it looks better. But it also looks like it is just a form of mac os. When the fact is that many people just want a tablet that will run mac os on it along with apps.
A colleague installed the beta on his iPad Air this morning (it's a "spare") - feels it is equivalent to his iPad Pro from last year in terms of function, and so far no random beta quirks. Early feedback is he's very impressed - but no need to eg edit video, it's mostly as a portable Citrix client plus the normal 'work laptop' stuff.
Will be keen to try when the public beta is out on an old machine

Does the iPad support Time Machine yet? I wouldn't be comfortable relying on iCloud as my sole backup solution.

Just iCloud as far as I am aware.

Don't expect that to ever happen, it would be a backwards step for Apple.
On a side note, TVos 26 looks good and seems stable.
For the sake of the family, I have not tried out the singing and karaoke app....

You can local backup an iphone or ipad. It's not time machine but it can be done

Yes, that looks amazing.
Under the old ‘iPad for consumption, Mac for creation’ mantra, I always found it very difficult and inefficient to create and edit Numbers spreadsheets on iPad - even when using a mouse. It’s clunky and non-intuitive. I always defaulted to MBP.
The gap has narrowed in recent years and iPadOS 26 looks like it’s really closing it right up. It’ll be interesting to see how close Numbers gets to the Mac version.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I just want an iPad Pro running MacOS. I know it's not going to happen but.....
