I'm trying to purchase an Apple iPhone for Christmas.

I don't like the Apple 17, in particular the plateau

The Apple 16 was the "AI" model. Apple explicitly sold it as “built for Apple Intelligence,” with suite of on‑device AI features, enabled by the A18 chip. So not keen on that one either

So that leaves 13 through 15, which are expensive, but a tiny bit more aforadable.

I'm suspicious of demo units / ex-show room models, in particular of any company that have tens of these for sale.

Maybe selling one or two of demo units / ex-show room models seems natural.

There's a company called Mobile Station

If you search for "apple iphone ex demo" you get 122 iphones. And it looks like a tiny shop, with one location.

For kicks, I did check out ebay, for Australian phones, but despite the risk were as expensive or more than ones in New Zealand, once shipped to New Zealand.

Any thoughts?

Just turn off apple AI if you dont want to use it, literally one toggle switch.

Why pay for a feature that I'll never use?

kingdragonfly: Why pay for a feature that I'll never use?

Because you will end up paying not much less for an older phone with possibly with a degraded battery

Just turn off what you don't want to use

Buying a 13-15 means 2-4 years less software updates which is very important to factor in to your buying equation. Many people advise to buy the newest model that they can afford.

That said there are often 13-15 popping up on GZ for sale. Replace the battery with an Apple Original which is important because it might otherwise trigger software locks.

Off subject, but I thought it was funny:

Sam to Iphone: "Hey Siri, what's my wife's name?"

Siri: "Sorry. I don't know. What's your daughter's name?:

Yea you want the latest models for iOS support, better cpu and more memory now apple stopped being stingy. My XS Max was supported for 7 years, can’t support this years new iOS but it will still get security updates for a bit.

The AI stuff isn’t going away soon, new laptops now have NPU’s in them so you’ll have to disable those too id you don’t want to use them.
