Himself's elderly aunt (now in a dementia ward) has an ipad that another nephew conned her into buying early 2022.

The nephew set it up but I doubt she used it much.

The ipad has now worked its way to me as no one can get into it.

Well neither can I, even though I do know the PIN and icloud credentials.

The little book of passwords can be a wonderful thing.

When the ipad is turned on it comes up with "hello" in a variety of languages.

Its asked me what language and country, which I've answered.

Its now at a point where it needs the 2FA phone number.

The nephew stupidly used her landline number, so it cant receive any codes.

Its disconnected now anyway.

It then asked for another phone number to send a code to, so I used mine.

Code received and entered, and now I have to "wait" for an indeterminate length of time for the next step.

Which is that an email will be sent to the icloud account.

But I cant get into that either as it is requesting a code from the impossible landline number.

I feel I am going round and round in circles now, in a chicken and egg situation from which there is no way out.

I dont know much about Apple-land so I feel I have reached the end of my abilities.

Is this ipad irretrievable and now a placemat, or is there hope?

Any chance someone has a reciept still? From memory there are limited cases where Apple can reset the activation lock under a repair setting with proof of purchase and good reason. Probably does need a lot of luck and what not.

Alternatively if you can get someone to reclaim the landline number (assuming it's not reassigned to another customer), https://support.apple.com/en-nz/102606 does say they can do call instead of text. Probably needs Spark/OneNZ's cooperation if it's an ancient number and in one of their pools.

If you have the iCloud creds, can you log into iCloud/AppleID on a PC and remove the iPad from the account from within there?

Don't know if that will help, but it may let you set it up as a new iPad (as obviously it has been reset but won't let you set it up as it's already on an account).

Otherwise, yep, you'll need proof it's yours and a good story along with a lot of hope to get Apple to reset it.

Aunty's house has been cleared out ready for sale.

I think we can safely say a receipt will not be forthcoming.

I'll see what, if anything, happens in a few days.

Bank records? If you can place shop, date & rough time, stores will often be able to recall receipts. Even better if they remembered to record the serial number which is quite common for shops to do with Apple products.

So a mysterious magician has appeared, waved his magic wand and "presto chango" it works!

For posterity, and the future people finding this thread, are you able to share what the solution involved?

I have a stack of iPhones at work that need unlocking....  been told cant do anything with them which is frustrating as it'd save us a small fortune at work in phones.

(And yes, MDM is the way forward)

You dont even need an MDM, long as they are in Apple Business Manager you can unlock them.

You're saying that your devices are MDM locked? Trivial to bypass

I queried the iPad serial against Apple's GSX database - FMI = Off. We double checked that with 3U Tools - iCloud Lock = Off, Device Unactivated. This was a rare & fortunate situation. Because of attempts to sign in with various credentials, I reinstalled iPadOS & that was that.

There are other, more aggressive methods available when FMI = On, as the vast majority are. MDM is no problem but for iPhones with FMI = On, SIM connectivity is not often going to be available, rendering iPhones as iPods. Sometimes you get lucky but no-one seems to be able predict the result.

No sorry, theyre just locked as a single user non-managed device.

Staff set them up themselves when they started, and when left didn't reset the phones or remove from their accounts, and mysteriously always forget all the details related to the account tied to the phone when contacted. 9/10 used personal email accounts so cant even spin up the email and do a reset that way.

With original proof of purchase receipts, you'd stand a solid chance of Apple doing the right thing for you by removing the accounts. Alongside the original receipt, seems that if the iCloud account hasn't been used for 2 years then your chances of approval increase dramatically.

It's free to apply & does work, especially for corporate clients. Go here.

We did look at that, but got told the exact opposite of what you've mentioned :D

If our hardware guy gets bored over the holidays I'll get him to talk to our One account manager for some invoices for the phones and get him to try it. :)
