Now Vodafone Australia is offering Visual VoiceMail, does anybody have details of VVM for New Zealand (it was reported to be in testing last year)

Interesting to note though..the service uses data so if you have a few messages a day or whatever it could chew through your allocation quickly...esp if on casual (you will end up paying a $1 a day to see your messages)

Visual Voicemail needs to transfer data in order to keep synchronised with the Voicemail system. The data transferred will incur charges according to your current plan. However, the following is an example of potential data transfers based on sample user data for retrieval of your voicemail messages.

The maximum voicemail message size across the average user is approx. 50kb in size.

The maximum number of voicemail messages is 20.

This means that to download a full mailbox with maximum size messages would transfer approximately 1MB of data

In V3 of the iPhone software it can use a different APN for VVM so they could set up another APN for VVM so it does not use your data for your Internet Data

Good point. Guess time will tell. Hope XT get the rights to sell Iphones (or at least support them) soon so that we can get this feature as well

A service like this would be great, I'm often frustrated by having to use the simple menus to cycle through messages.

I would be even happier with a premium voicemail-to-email service.

I actually was involved in developing something along those lines. Last time I tested (~Sept2008) it was working very well, in final UAT mode. Included optional intergration of VoIP, fax and mobile mailboxes, seperate or unified ingress number properties (notification options, greetings etc etc). Optionally intergrated into a hosted exchange product also, not just smtp push.

So don't be a tease, when (if) does this get released to the general public?

Sorry if there was some confusion there, I was reffering to a seperate platform in testing by another telco in refference to Nates comment.

Ive been using visual voicemail on vodafone in oz since i arrived last week. works well! I'm on prepay at the moment and can get $150 worth of credit by topping up with $29 so it's no big deal on my credit to be getting the odd voicemail through as data. have to say the mobile postpaid/prepay plans/caps over here put the kiwi options to shame!

Thanks for clarifying, I did misinterpret that you were involved in the VFNZ team while you were in NZ.

I have said that for a while now.

I cant remember though if thye have connection charges (like, in the US dialing a number costs you, even if they dont answer)

But yeah, I would still prefer the AUS options. If one month I wanted to use more data than txt's it would be possible.

but back on topic; I would assume they would use a different APN. Although, in the USA, I think they forced iPhone plans upon people - which included a data bundle anyway so it wasnt such a worry.

It's only a problem now, because like us in NZ, mobile data has really only started developing in the last few months.

But it would be nice to have Visual Voicemail enabled phones. They would really be a step forward, no matter what platform.

It still jerks me now that VVM was one of the features i was looking forward to with the iPhone 3G, but it just never came :(
