I've heard in the past that different software jailbreaks phones using different methods, and that some of these methods have a questionable safety record.

I have access to both Mac and PC platforms. In looking to upgrade my 1st generation 2.5G iPhone to 3.0, which application should I be watching out for and which ones should I avoid like the plague?

Thanks in advance.

PwnageTool, from the iPhone Dev Team (http://blog.iphone-dev.org). Platform doesn't really matter, but Macs usually get PwnageTool earlier than Windows PCs.

I forgot I need to be able to block EDGE/GPRS data on my 1st gen iPhone/2G.

Will there be a BossPrefs or similar available at launch to change this? Or is there already a feature in the OS 3.0 to turn off data?

There's a feature to turn off 3G, but no setting for GPRS/EDGE yet. You'll have to wait for the jailbreak to come out.

Why would someone want to turn off 3G if they still wanted EDGE/GPRS? Weird. Surely you either want data on or off.

3G uses more battery.
