I am using my iphone tethered to my macbook and have found the download speeds very low.   Speedtest shows download speeds around the 25-35 kb/s mark - that was in the Wellington CBD where my vodem comes in a lot faster.

I'm using a 3G with 3.0 software via USB.   iPhone APN on the phone.

Is there something I'm missing?  Overseas, people are reporting much higher speeds using a tethered iPhone.

Cheers

Darryn

I achieved 200 - 300 kb/s download with my mates iPhone the other day. Located in Whangarei. Did nothing special, just plugged it in and enabled tethering on phone.

Not lightning speeds, but its better than no internet when on the go.

I have tried the CBD's of wellington and Dunedin where I get good speeds with my Vodem, but very slow with iPhone.

Hopefully others will have some thoughts..

Hi. I dont have an iPhone yet, but Ive seen a similar issue with some other phones. It required me to tweak the MTU size back from the windows default of 1500.

Use the old ping -f -l [packet length] [server] to figure out the optimal MTU. Could be different on Vodafone vs XT. Or you could just wing it and go to 1400 and see if it makes a difference.

ive tried this using it with my macbook pro... and iphone connected to XT network...
works like a charm... and real quick... just as quick as you would expect when using web on the phone itself... awesome!
GO XT :) hehe

Thanks Folks - can someone confirm network settings they use when getting good speeds. APN etc? I am using standard VFNZ carrier file.

Yesterday I tried this for the 1st time.
Easy to set up.
Im in Te Rapa Hamilton.
I got 360kb.
Someone suggested I move over to near the Waikato Stadium as they have upgraded that area. Have yet to try that yet

APN will not change speed

Thanks Johnr,

Any thoughts from you as to why my speed is so slow?

Hmmm, I'm interested in this as this is one of the reasons I want an iPhone
