Im seeking feedback to see what others are experancing as I cant see any clearcut info from apple or other forum posts on this.

How do you know you are using WIFI on the iPhone 3GS?

shows full signal bar, 3G icon or WIFI icon not both

go to webbrowser load say geekzone WIFI icon disappeas and 3G icon appears

Go to settings turn off 3G just signal bars and WIFI icon

go to webbrowser load say geekzone WIFI icon disappeas to a blue dot

Does this mean Im using WIFI or GPRS???  The user guide says GPRS

The question is how do use WIFI

If I turn my carrier to Telecom that kills any incoming calls and gprs etc so the iPhone is soley on WIFI

Now I get Safari cant connect because it is not connected to a network!!

My netbook and laptop connect through the same router and iPhone 3GS is connected to the internet.

Tried turning off all encry / mac filtering etc no internet on wifi yet every other lappy pc ok and tried 2 different routers.

any ideas or advice

If you enable WiFi and join a network, it will ovveride cellular data (3G etc). You must be in range. It won't just change to cellular data for no reason.

Thats the issue I dont have internet on the WIFI connection.  Has joinded the Network.

There are no options to configure internet options through WIFI every other pc  / laptop has no issue.  You cant or dont have tools on the iPhone to ping anything its either connect yes or no.

Connect to the network. Click the little blue > arrow icon in the tab which will take you to settings for the network.

I know that they are there and shows a IP adress and Subnet mask but still does not get internet access just defaults to 3G

I will try this on a WIFI hotspot as looks if my routers and the iPhone dont play well together.

wahoo now working

Under WIFI under my networks settings I now have Router address and DNS address, these two feilds where blank.

Dont know what I did here but are using a a Linksys WRT160n and a Orcon Gigaset router.  On the Gigaset I turned off policy based routing and extened the ip range and that must have reset something as the iPhone now stays on WIFI.

I also used a free app called Codepacity, LLC whick let me see my IP address settings etc

With 3G on can now surf on WIFI
