So I was lucky enough to get the grabaseat deal to Tokyo yesterday ($699 return - weehee!).

I'll be there for 2 weeks, and according to the Telecom website it'll cost me $5 a minute for calls while roaming on NTT or Softbank... not so great.

Does anyone know if I can purchase a prepaid sim from a Japanese carrier for use with my iPhone 3GS? I had a bit of a Google but there's a lot of information out there and it's a tad confusing. My initial thoughts are that no I can't, but I thought it was worth asking anyway!

I'll be catching up with a few friends from all over the show, but the friend I'm staying with in Tokyo doesn't have an internet connection so it'd be great to be able to get in contact with people via phone instead - and not have to pay through the nose for it!

Thanks in advance

I'm assuming you're wanting to make calls within Japan?

You could always buy a Vodafone prepay SIM and use that if making local calls. I roamed on NTT when I was there and checking the VF website now calls are only $1.45 per minute.

Language is a bit of a barrier but there are so many phone stores it shouldn';t take long to find somebody at a phone store who speaks good English and could help you.
