Hello to all.

I have just got an iPhone.  I am using a first generation iPhone which I have modded to run on the Vodafone network.  My problem is that the phone is accessing the internet via Vodafone's laughably slow cellular network internet access instead of my Orcon connection through my home wireless LAN (the Vodafone access I am talking about is the basic internet access which comes with most Vodafone mobile plans these days - you pay a dollar per day to use it).

The phone has recognised my LAN, but is using vodafone's basic internet access instead (I know it is using Vodafone and not my LAN because I can still access the internet when the LAN is disabled in the iPhone).  What I want is for the phone to never ac cess the internet via Vodafone, and use the LAN instead.

Any assistance is very welcome.  Thanks.

When the WiFi is disabled on iPhone, the iPhone will automatically establish seamless connection to WWAN. But if there's WiFi and connected, it won't use WWAN - however it doesn't give much indication if it is not. But if the WiFi signal "fan" icon appeared, then it is using WLAN, not WWAN.

So if you required faster speed on cellular data why did you not purchase a iphone 3G then?

Hi.

I don't need cellular access to the internet, but I want to access my LAN via wifi at home. I am having trouble doing this. The iPhone tells me that I am connected to my LAN, but the LAN drops out and is replaced by cellular internet connectivity. If the iPhone's wifi is connected to my LAN by wireless, then the cellular internet access should not be necessary. This is puzzling me.

(The other reason I want the phone never to connect to the internet via the cellular network is that my phone plan charges $1 per day for internet access.  If this is triggered every time I check my gmail from home, the bill could get large quite quickly).

You should check to see if your WiFi has difficulty to establish a stable WiFi coverage. You should have gotten yourself iPod Touch if you don't want to use the mobile data at all...

Thanks. My wifi works perfectly with my mac, so the problem doesn't lie there.

I've heard reports of the 1st gen iphone not having the greatest wifi coverage because of the aluminum body
acting like a shield. hence the change to plastic body on 3g and 3gs.

incidentally VF have recently made changes to iphone cellular data
at one time you needed a iphone data account to access cellular data
that is no longer the case the iphone will use cellular data no mater what you do
if wifi is not present.

the only way to stop is is to have data disabled on your VF account
or change the APN to point to www.m2.net.nz

Fact is, the iPhone was built to be on the internet, so Apple have made it so that transitioning from WiFi to WWAN is as seamless as possible which to me equates to a great user-experience.

A the user above said, the only way to disable it truly is to get it disabled on your account - but assuming you use MMS, disabling your data (vodafone side), if I remember correctly, disables Internet AND MMS.

Are you sure it's connected to WiFi or just that it's picked up your SSID?

Under settings WiFi and choose a network, mine has a tick beside the SSID name a padlock showing it's a secured network and the apple wifi logo as described in a post above

Mine automatically connects to wifi and soon as i'm in range, should be the same for you.

PS Make sure you haven't got MAC address restrictions turned on in your router otherwise it won't connect - I had this with a machine I was trying to get going the other day I was getting frustrated until the penny dropped.
