Has anyone else experienced frequent dropping of the Vodafone signal on an iPhone 3Gs?


I have a iPhone 3G and a new iPhone 3Gs (2 weeks old), the 3Gs will show full signal, but then will go into searching mode and then report no signal. In the mean time my iPhone 3G is still on max signal.


I have searched the internet and see this is an issue around the world and appears not to be related to the provider, but the iPhone 3Gs handset.


So curious to see if anyone else has heard of this happening in NZ?


My current test is to turn off 3G and see if it can maintain a signal, but I have my doubts as it also drops the wireless from time to time, but not as often as the Vodfone signal. Turning the iPhone off or even doing a reset doesn't fix the issue. There seems to be no pattern to when or why it losses the signal or regains it's signal making it hard to monitor the problem.

have you used an xt sim in the iphone? if you have , you possibly have a network lock..you need to plug phone into yr itunes application and do a restore..this should reset everything back to vodafone settings.

It is a brand new iPhone 3Gs on Vodafone. It has only ever had the one Vodafone sim it, which is a pre paid sim (moving it onto an on account iPhone plan).

Another to try is change the network setting.  Settings => Settings => Carriers => set to Automatic

Even thou you are on Vodafone and you can choose Vodafone always choose Automatic. (tick)

This does make a difference when moving between cell sites and avoids drop off's in coverage.

Also note on Vodafone iPhone operates on the 2100 frequency not 900 which is mainly rural so there is not always 3G coverage but will step down to GPRS

Thanks for the tips, I have tried both automatic an manual, but it didn't help.

The issue isn't a coverage issue. I live in Palmerston North and the iPhone 3G is in 3G coverage the entire time. The iPhone 3GS has 3G coverage and full signal strength in the same spot, but then drops out randomly and starts searching for a signal. It's not dropping back to GPRS, it losses ALL cell connection.

Best bet take it back under warranty - I would get the unit checked.

(as you say your 3G iPhone still shows full signal and you have checked settings, reset etc)

I dont experance these symptons but Im in a different area.

hey @Briggsy
My 3GS does the same thing occasionally. I'm in PN and my friend has a 3G that will show 5 bars and the 3G icon, while mine (right next to him) shows 2 bars and the little circle icon, which is GPRS I think.

I experience the same signal issues. If you take the time to browse some online forums, this is happening all over the world. I think it's just the combination of components and materials that they use. I found that if I disable 3G, signal becomes much stronger and more stable; obviously at the cost of network speed. Though I just turn it back on when I need to. The added bonus of turning off 3G is that my battery life jumped from a day to 2 and even 3 days.

Hmmm...I actually think this is quite disturbing. In my mind the iPhone is a premium product at a premium price, and I would certainly not expect glitches like this. If the problem is widespread then I will reconsider my own decision to buy one.

It's an Apple product. No matter the issues, it will sell well and have a loyal fanbase. For me, the benefits outweigh the issues. This won't be the case for everyone.
