Hi Folks,

purchased an iphone on ebay whilst in OZ which has had a full factory restore after being on an OZ network (apparantly)... SO it is saying No SIM card installed insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate iPhone. Seems simple right??? Well I have taken it into Vodafone and Telecom stores and they have tried their unlocked SIM's to no avail... I have even tried my OZ Vodafone SIM to no avail. I have tried the recovery thing on itunes but AGAIN it says insert valid unlocked SIM blah blah blah....

I am now beggining to think it is either locked to an OZ network or was actually stolen and has been like fully locked or something. Is there a way to get this thing unlocked and working???? What's this "jail breaking" I hear about? If poss would like to avoid ringing around Optus, Vodafone, Telstra in Australia to getting unlocked.

CHEERS!

It'll be locked to an AU network like most handsets sold in Australia.

OK! So, how do I go about unlocking it? What are all my options?

First of all you need to know the Original Country and Carrier the iPhone came from. It may be a USA one which has been jailbroken in the past so it worked in AU. I've never found out how you work this out from the serial number or alike.

If you can work this out you can contact the orginal carrier and get them to carrier unlockit (alas only a few carriers do this so don't hold your breath).

Your other option is to jailbreak/activate the iPhone. if its a 2G/3G/Older 3GS then its quite easy.. check blackra1n or whatever is the latest program this week

You could search for unlocking iphone on google and try and use one of the online websites that do it. Just make sure they have the option to unlock an aus carrier iphone. Should cost less than $20.

If it's an AU-new phone then it's best to get it officially unlocked by the original operator. Any hacks are a "best effort" and are likely to be problematic as Apple updates the OS.

All iPhones sold direct from Apple are unlocked in Australia. If it's sold through a carrier they can come network locked so you'd need to pay them to unlock it for you. Most carriers here charge up to $100, even more, to unlock the iPhone - if you want to do it legitimately and not go the jailbreak activation route.
