My understanding was that IM and IRC wont be able to run the background still. Multitasking isnt open to all API functions.
Can any one else confirm?

Unfortunately Twitter, IM and IRC apps cannot update statuses in the background due to limititations of the iOS 4 APIs. They can only check for updates in the foreground and that’s how it’s going to be for a while. The only workaround is via push notifications which can alert you of new messages when they arrive.

The Windows Live app is (for me) by far the nicest IM so far, but doesnt support "multi-tasking" It would be perfect if it did.

The closest I have seen is eBuddy with push notifications. I use it.

I use eBuddy due to facebook and goggle chat support. It is my all in one chat client.

IM+ Is the best iPhone communications app by far. Works on iOS4 and is very nice. Cost a bit though but their is a free version.

Anyone got any good games that work on OS4

Twitter for iPhone, Windows Live Messenger are iOS4 ready.

When I installed Skype, it said 'It is not supported in this version of iPhone" which took me by surprise as I was expecting Skype to be iOS4 ready! They showed the demo in the keynote sometime back!
