I'm on the verge of moving from Windows Mobile to iPhone 4 when it's released here and I'm interested - and rather concerned and perplexed - to see how little interest there seems to be in automated profiling for iPhone.

In Windows it's easy and widely implemented - triggers for profiles include your calendar (meeting status = busy), hardware connections (bluetooth/usb/whatever connected), time profiles (silent overnight, quiet in the office, etc) and so on.

iPhone doesn't seem to do even basic profiling and I can't find any apps that do the job well either.

There's not much about Windows Mobile I'll miss, but I am a heavy user of profiles and this one does concern me!

Any comments or suggestions would be very welcome from people who know iOS and apps a lot better than I.

Cheers,
Mark

Unfortunately this is one of those things you'll have to jailbreak in order to have.. Apple don't allow apps to access this sort of thing (or run in the background continuously) so it just isn't possible in an App Store application at present.

Really? Damn!

I was hoping to avoid jail-breaking. I'm pretty tech comfortable, but it sounds rather risky and warranty-damaging!

Anyway - thanks for the reply.

Jailbreaking is easily able to be undone and a full restore using iTunes removes the jailbreak and you are back to a warrantable state.

Ah ok - doesn't sound so bad!

Really appreciate your advice - thanks.

Regards,
Mark

PS. Any jailbreak site or app you particularly recommend?  (Although I guess I should wait to see whether the jailbreaks work with iOS4.)

There is no jailbreak available for iPhone 4 yet, but it seems as though one is almost ready to be released by a guy called comex. The main people to follow regarding jailbreaks are the iPhone dev team (blog.iphone-dev.org).

Thanks dannyres.  I'll keep an eye on that.

I appreciate this advice on jail-breaking, but my searching still hasn't revealed any full automated profile software, even for jail-broken iPhones.

Looks like iPhoners don't worry about that sort of functionalty!

It's not something that I have really missed since moving to iPhone.

I had a lot of different profiles set up with the Nokia I had prior, but to be honest, you learn very quickly that it's not going to kill you to go without it.

It does have a very definitive hardware switch for the silent/vibrate profile which you can activate without even removing from your pocket/bag etc.

Thanks 1eStar.  Yeah, I've heard from iPhone friends that it's very easy to use, but I'm talking about fully automated profiling which not only avoids the need to remember that manual process at start and end of meetings, but allows smart profiles such as a quiet 'ping' for an important reminder during a meeting (i.e. not total silence), a lower volume level for rings/texts/notifications when in the office versus on a sports field on the weekend, turning off email alerts when the phone's connected to the car, etc, etc.

WinMo and Android have native support to a certain level and then quite a few paid apps which really take advantage of this cleverly.

Not having a go at iPhone (I'm taking the plunge after all!), but strange that there seems to be nothing like this available.  Perhaps it's just too difficult!

Yea the hardware switch solves all these problems if you ask me. Walk into a movie, you only need to reach into your pocket and flick it to vibrate/silent which takes less than a second.

Hi Benjip.  Yup, I get that and it's the sort of thing one often needs to do manually.  Per my post above (we were posting at the same time I think) I'm referring to the smarter stuff based on calendar, hardware connections, etc.

But thanks for the comment.

Cheers,
Mark

There's not anything remotely similar to what you want for a stock iPhone, as far as i know and fir a jailbroken one, close is about as close as you'll get...you're not likely to have the exact thing you're looking for with an iPhone...it's always a case of trade-offs.

Thanks Handsomedan - I'm coming to the same conclusion!

I'm interested in those 'cose' solutions for jailbroken iPhones ... can't really find anything on that front even.  Any ideas where I should search?  Google for once ain't doing the job!
