ok so i have an ipad 3g on XT.

I rang telecom to see how  i go about checking my broadband usage online.

Turns out telecom can't tell you your usage for ipad users as they said the ipad cant receive text messages to register the new micro sim on the telecom website.  The only way to register is for the ph number of the broadband account to receive a password sent from the telecom website.

According to Telecom I dont have any device that can take microsims and receive txt msgs.

I knew i shouldnt have gone with Telecom their customer service always lets you down.  Took me 14 minutes and 4 people to find out the above information :(

What to do?

Only thing I'm thinking of doing is going to the telecom shop where i brought it from and get them to sort it out with some sort of microSIM adapter and a cellphone.

Anyone else been in this situation and sorted it out?

Have a look around the forums, this is NOT a Telecom only problem.

I thought the iPad was NOT classified as a phone, and thus would not be able to receive OR send texts.

It does what it's supposed to do. The 3G part is just a modem, isn't it?

We tried all sorts of tricks. We have it sending messages - you need one of our microSIMs, not a cutdown normal one - but no, it doesn't receive them.*

*Actually, it DOES receive them, our elements confirm delivery success. It just drops the message into the bitbucket afterwards.

Just call Telecom *333, enter the phone number and you should be able to listen balances, topup, etc.

It's a problem with the iPad - the device won't receive SMS (it will, but discard those)...

You can top up. It wont let you check balances though.
I thought they were enabling data usage online for prepay?

Ok just had a look, and the password gets sent by text so that's no good either. Just call 0800323232 opt 5, opt 4, and you qwill speak to someone. have the ph# and sim# handy. Ask them you want to know your balance.

Failing that theres a lot of phones which you can line up the micro sim enough to receive the text to set it up once. I have had success with the nokia 3120, 6120, and others.

(If you do this and get your sim stuck somewhere, don't come crying to me, use common sense here please)

Once you have done this you can go online and change your password so you can go online any time to check balance.

Have telecom changed it so you don't need to reset your password every time on prepaid now?

If you sign into the online gallery, you can set a permanent pw that works in the usage meter..... I think anyway. I cant check right now I will try it at home and report back tonight.

I went through the same hassles when I first got my XT micro SIM.  Registering for the online usage meter required a text message for the password.  I spent ages talking to Telecom via phone and in person instore, but was not offered a solution.

So I decided to get hold of a mobile phone (I've got a iPhone 3GS so this won't work), a Nokia 3210 to be exact, and line up the micro SIM with the connectors on the phone so I could receive said text message.  It took a little fiddling to do, but I got the text in the end and now I am all sorted.

Also, if you have access to iPhone4 then obviously that would work, or if you have access to a normal XT Sim then your number can be moved onto that > process the password change > back to Microsim, this would normally be doable in about 20 minutes, but could of course take longer.

Make your own adapter
Grab the password from a handset.  And then use it on the ipad..

To check usage

Wifi/3G http://www.telecom.co.nz/mbbmeter
3G only ( more detail ) http://yt.telecom.co.nz/mobile/view/account-info-view

You have to know your cell number & I can't remember how the password got set, I found the first address by digging on the telecom site ( down the very bottom of http://www.telecom.co.nz/mobile/mobilebroadband/manage ), the 3G address I got off twitter ( @tehoro )

thanks for the replies

without the ability to set password and no one selling the micro to normal sim adapters the only option is to make a micro to normal sim template  and try and get it to register on a mobile phone.

Phone Telecom data help and ask for someone to set you up with a number to access the online usage data.

Data Help 0800 400 909

Telecom set me up with an online 'Your Telecom' account for a XT 3G modem, I phoned them on my vodafone mobile... No problems at all.
