Hi,

I've got a friend currently in Sydney who's heading to the Apple Shop later today.  If they were to purchase an iPhone 4 for me from the Apple Shop there, would it work here in NZ without having to jailbreak or do anything else other than what you would do if you were to buy it here?

Thanks,
Lewis

The Apple Store ones are not carrier locked, I'm pretty sure. But the ones from other retailers (including ones like JB Hifi) are locked.

Disclaimer: I haven't actually got an iPhone 4 so YMMV regarding Apple Store. I am 100% sure about other retailers though, as I did investigate several last time I was there when I was considering an iPhone for myself. They all told me Apple Store ones were not locked, but there were no Apple Stores handy to my location so I didn't actually check one out.

An iPhone bought from an Apple store in Australia is 100% unlocked, you will have no problem at all using it here in NZ.

JB and other retailers aren't locked. The only locked iPhones in Au are from carriers such as Optus and Telstra. Even not all carriers are locked either.

But buying direct from an Apple Store is all good, yes.
