Hi there.

Basically, I can’t get my iPod working on my home WiFi network, which works alright on my laptop. When I connect to it and enter the password (it is accepted with no problems), the connection icon on top of the screen appears, but when I open Safari, it says that there’s no internet connection. And same with all other applications which need an internet connection.

I know for sure it is not a problem of the device, since it works alright with other networks around. Moreover, its firmware is constantly being updated, once has been reset, and now the iPod is even replaced with a new model — nothing changed.

So, how do I fix this?

What is the model of your wifi router and iPod? What type of security are you using (WEP, WPA WPA2) and what version of iOS are you using??

Is it the newest gen ipod? I believe the newest one is wifi 'n' while your router may only be a/b/g

Yes, it is 4th gen iPod Touch running 4.1 firmware. But I mentioned before that I experienced the same thing on my previous one, which was 2nd gen, and on other firmware versions as well.

The router is Netgear WNR2000.

The security type is apparently WPA.

I recall that I used to have trouble connecting my ipod 2nd gen, and it was due to the routers ID being hidden, rather than visable. That however may not be anthing to do with your problem, but it does sound like it is something with the routers settings.

Sorry, I’m too experienced with routers, but I do have access to the settings of this one. So what is the exact thing I need to look for in there?

Google it and you will find it is a common problem. I have 2nd generation but when updraded to latest OS lost all ability to connect to the internet. There are several suggested fixes including completely removing all internet settings, doing a factory reset, and then setting up your internet connections from scratch again.

The only way mine got fixed was when I upgraded my wifi router, suddenly everything works perfectly again. Maybe your router is an older one and not compatable?

Computers tend to be a bit more forgiving with wifi.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

For mine it is in the settings, under wireless settings, and I have 'Broadcast network name' ticked. Apple products are like that, as the ipod is the only apple device I have, and it needs that enabled to work with my us robotics router.  You may need to get a new router if it is very old and not compatible with the ipod.

I missed out 'not' in 'not too experienced' in my previous post, sorry.

Anyways, I didn’t find such an option in the router’s settings. The iPod seems to appear though in the list of 'Attached devices' along with other computers at home, it just isn’t let to access the internet for some reason. Whatever site I try to open, Safari immediately says that it’s not connected to the internet. And when I try to access the router’s settings page (192.168.1.1) instead, it appears doing something for a while before saying that there’s no response from the server.

I tried to reset network settings, renew lease, 'forget network', reboot the ipod — nothing helps.

And unfortunately I can’t replace the router since I’m not the owner of the house I’m living in. But there must be a workaround, I guess… I indeed recall my previous iPod working on this network before some software update.

My suggestion for a work around would be reserve your ipod a static IP assigned by the router then port forward that ip through the firewall of the router. However, how to do this varies for every router so I can't even attempt to walk you through it. Probably googling your router manual would turn up how.

I used to do this for my iPod touch 1 and 2G on older firmware at home and work, my iphone for whatever reason doesn't seem to need it. Or maybe I did it at work and just can't remember now but I know I don't have it done at home.

Edit: Ok, just checked at home and only the 1G still needs this. The 2G used to but I think one of the firmware changes along the way made it unnecessary. I didn't think I needed to do it for the iPhone (latest OS) and sure enough no reserved ip for it on my router. I remember being happily suprised that it worked just by putting the security password in.

I have tried giving to the ipod a static IP and all that, didn’t result in anything. But about porting it forward through the firewall… I don’t think the router has any firewall settings, at least I can’t see any, apart from content filtering stuff.

Try this: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/WNR2000/RealAudio.htm

I've got "real audio" in there but you can sub in your ipod's ip and for the ports "any"

Edit: Here's the more general page for that router:

Unbelievable, it works like a charm. Thank you so much!
