I'm attending a couple of concerts at Vector Arena (Paramore & Metallica), and I'll be hijacking my wife's iPhone 4 so I can take some footage of one or two songs. Are there any tricks and tips that I should be aware of to ensure I get reasonable sound and video quality?

Also does anyone have a guesstimation as to the size of the file required for approx 4-5 minutes of such footage if recorded in 720P?

It is easy to hang your finger over the camera lens when filming in landscape orientation, not good!

It is also easy to put your finger over the microphone which mutes the recording (One of the two grills on the bottom of the phone is speaker, the other is microphone) which may or may not be a good thing (some phones handle loud music better than others).

Best thing, is to cover the screen, so it is not visible. Some acts will boot you out if they catch you filming.

Should be fine to film at metallica, heaps were in chch. Cameras everywhere

just because everyone is doing it in most cases it"s still illegal , i just think its to hard to police now, just think of confiscating a few thousand phones and returning them after the concert is over, a nightmare

a) don't get caught
b) hold the phone still (they pick up ALL movement)
c) dont take it into the mosh pit ;-) Else you'll likely lose it

Thanks for the tips, guys. Unfortunately I didn't get to see them until after the concert last night :-)

Footage still turned out OK. Here are a few of the videos, if anyone is interested. I'm well pleased with the quality (esp. audio, considering how loud it was there).

Well its a HUGE improvement over previous attempts at concert footage taken with my mobile phone (Razr v3X). Sound is almost always an inaudible soup of noise, with video barely discernable. So image stabilization or not, I'm still very happy :-D
