From Wired:

A security flaw in the iPhone allows strangers to bypass the handset’s lock screen with a few button presses.

Verfied it happens on my Iphone 4 with 4.1 with a simple and non-simple passcode.

Nasty, keep those phoens physically secure!

Wow, that is pretty shocking.
Shows just how bad the security can be on such popular devices.

From what I've read this does not affect the 4.2 betas. ;)

It works with anything more than just the pound key.

To achieve - when in locked screen: Tap emergency call > tap pound 3 times > Hit the call button and the lock button almost at the same time.

That sucks big time. I don't own an iPhone but if I did I would not be happy that I would have to wait till November for a fix (which requires a version upgrade)

They are suddenly more of a theift target now the theives can get past one of the security features.

It hasn't been confirmed that the fix will only occur once 4.2 is released. With such a serious and easily replicable flaw there's every chance Apple would push the fix out as a separate update before 4.2 is released.

Unfortunately not:

Apple Australia released the following statement early this morning:
"We're aware of this issue and we will deliver a fix to customers as part of the iOS 4.2 software update in November"
