Seems like it'll take 2-weeks to get one from apple.
Where can you buy one without paying heaps more??

Cheers
:)

Nope.. unless you get from Parallel Imports. Though 2 weeks is not really that far/long to wait for. And seeing some of the warranty-experiences from others, getting from Apple directly will serve you better Apple experiences when you need to have it covered under warranty.

Just to expand a bit, you pretty much only have two options:

1. Buy from Apple and wait two weeks, hope that it's less.

2. Buy from a parallel importer and pay a lot more than Apple's price.

If you're not with Vodafone you could look at signing up to their Smart1 plan, then cancelling it the next day and paying the disconnection fee. For 16GB model: price = $619, first month of plan = $40.85, cancellation fee = $480, total cost = $1139.85 vs. Apple's $1123.

To be honest though, the easiest thing to do is wait the two weeks, saves all the mucking around.

And Noel Leemings they sell outright as well, but I think they'll push for contract.

agreed - if you have waited so long since the launch date in July, 2 weeks is hardly significant.

Do they actually....or is it only on a contract?

Edit: I just rang and they said only on a contract.

Oh weird, before they got the iPhone 4 I was told they would for the iPhone4 and did for the iPhone 3gs sell them outright...rules have changed obviously.

If you have to pay the contract for the first month anyway would it be worth using the contract for that first month?

AFAIK Vodafone has changed the ETC on iPhone 4 as well.. so the tried-technique of get it today and cancel it tomorrow might not worth the hassle and effort.

Though are you going to use it with another carrier or on prepay? If neither, then sign up to Smart1 (30mins anyone, 300 txts anyone, 250MB data - which has promotion of 3GB at the moment, indefinitely) for $40.85. This has subsidy of $480 on 32GB iPhone 4.

So taking this into account, that subsidy of $480 is $20/month for 24 months period. Which effectively brings your monthly Smart1 bill down to $20.80.

After using an iPhone4 for the last two weeks at work, but not being able to convince the bosses that it does actually help my work (IT Support) I have decided that I definatly need to get myself one (after wanting one but not being able to convince myself that spending an extra $650 over the cost of my iPod Touch for phone functions was a good idea)

If I did ever purchase it was going to be outright with a Prepay service (2degrees or XT), but threads like this have shown me that purchasing on a plan can actually be better value and my perceived notions about how crap 3G on Vodafone actually is (in the area I use the phone in and could travel to) have been thrown out (I still beleive that XT data is faster though)

I tried the Local Noels store with a friend a few weeks back... they had 20 units in stock...
Would only sell to new or re-sign contracts, as it's the only way they make any reasonable margin.  Apple pricing is such that selling outright they barely make enough to cover the transaction cost (if you use a credit card) or lunch money.....
