So i found this video of a guy putting a little bit of scotch tape on the back of his sim card then putting it back into the iPhone and dramatically improving signal, well i gave it ago and i must say im very surprised, in my office at home i can normally get 1 bar if im lucky now i have 3 or 4... really weird i guess it just needs a little more pressure on the contacts.

It also improved my 3G download and upload speeds buy about 40%.

If you try it remember your responsible not me lol.

I think thats more luck than anything right? its like an ethernet cable or something, if its slightly loose it wont slow the net down, it will either just stay connected or disconnect the net.

Absolutely no way in the world a piece of tape can make reception better. Scientfically prove me wrong and a slab of beer will be on it's way to your place courtesy of me.

Maybe it just so happened that at the same time he turned his phone on / put the sticky tape on this sim, his network just turned on a new cell tower near him? More chance of that happening that the sticky tape doing this imo.  OP have you tried taking the tape out, and trying your signal again?

Im not a muppet, i tested it many times with different sim cards from the sam network, it works because the sim dose not fit in the phone as well and the tape applies a little pressure on the bacj to push it on to the contacts.

The sim even feels loose when you take it out, i think its mire for an iphone thats a year old and has a well used sim tray

The SIM has nothing to do with RF performance. If it wasn't in firmy the phone wouldn't operate at all. With any ISO 7816 card there are 8 connectors and if the SIM was loose the phone would display a SIM error.

This will not do anything, just the placebo effect at work I am afraid.

You sure your just magically not holding it by the Death Grip now?

Its interesting though, who would have imagined a possible solution would be a piece of tape!

A few years ago, a tech at RIM told me that the colour of the plastic plays a part in performance (the materials used to colour the kit interacted with radio frequencies at different wavelengths).

I thought he was pushing it, but this was around the time the first 3G cards were coming out, and Vodafone could not get the red housing to work well with Novatel or Huawei... which is why if you notice their colouring was never quite vodafone 'red'.

Black is supposed to be the most neutral.... Blue the nastiest (too bad for O2 and Telecom...)

Silver or metallised phone covers can wreak havoc on reception. Not that surprising, but manufacturers continue to make them and people buy them...

Not always, since the 4 has the antenna on the outside it shouldn't get affected

Currently have

on my iphone and it still works exactly the same
