Can a vodafone iphone 4 be setup as a wireless hotshot without jail breaking it or do you have to use bluetooth and dialup networking?

Thanks

You can tether via the cable or bluetooth but if you want to set it up as a wifi hotspot you would need to jailbreak.

That's interesting since before I asked the question I looked up some online guides. It appeared that in IOS4 there is a Tethering Option but I couldn't find it on my phone which is surprising given it's unlocked. Presumably the carrier can request Apple to provide some sort of OS update to enable that option?

I guess BT modem will have to do.

you need to put an apn in for internet tethering in the apn setup, if you don't do that, the option won't appear.

I see that now. But it still seems there is no wifi tethering option so I presume IOS doesn't have that? I am just used to my Nexus One and I was trying to get the same functionality on my wife's iPhone4. Guess it's not as functional in this area.

ios doesn't support wifi tethering, you need to jailbreak and use myWi (which i hear drains battery a lot) or use itether on a jailbroken client to use the bluetooth tether option (which uses less battery).

You can tether using the cable AND bluetooth without jailbreaking. I have used both on a stock standard iphone 4 and both work fine.

You need to go to settings/network and scroll down and turn on tethering. The instructions for both methods are shown on screen.

Thanks. I had hoped to be able to share the Internet on the phone but I guess I can't now. Still for this particular need was - to be able to access the Internet from a connected PC, this should work fine.

I jailbroke and tried out mywi (to connect my non-3G ipad) for three days and mywi worked great. Since I was indoors I just left the iphone plugged into a wall charger. If you needed that functionality a lot it's worth the cost. Apple should really get this going in the itunes store or build it into the phone.

Tethering to a laptop is easy and built in to the phone.

Well my first attempt didn't work. Using the Toshiba BT stack on a Win7 laptop all I got was some error about the iPhone rejected the PAN request. I guess I need to spend more time on it. Plus the first time I turned on tethering on the iPhone, it locked up requiring a power reset. Not nice!
