I see in the US that using the iPhone as the tether to a wifi only iPad does not work. I read that this is a carrier issue. While I do not want to jailbreak my iPhone 4 and use MyWi are our NZ ones, which are not carrier locked able to tether to an iPad to give the wifi only iPad internet access?

Cheers to all who reply

Tony

No, it's not possible. It's not a carrier issue, it's simply not enabled by Apple.

Even Steve said so himself:

you can tether to other devices from Settings --> General --> Network --> internet tethering. You can NOT tether to an iPad using this method (that is what the iPad 3g is for)

any reason why you do not want to jailbreak? Security considerations aside as they can be patched up if you are so inclined.

Otherwise just go down to 2degrees or get Vodafone Broadband Hotspot R201

Thanks for the replies, appreciated

I will just get a 3G/wifi and use a prepaid sim I guess. May hang fire for the iPad 2 too.

I was jailbroken, but I saw no gain in the Cydia, Installous apps to be honest. Lotsa apps not any of interest. With the number in Appstore and that they are free/cheap I prefer to be legit, get latest iOS sooner and reduce malware/bug issues

Tks again

Any cheap iPad for sale ,lemme know!

jailbreaking is legitimate as far as the DMCA is concerned - although in NZ there isn't a clear guideline. Considering that up until mid 2008 format shifting (audio) was illegal in NZ (yes it was illegal to own an ipod / iphone pre april 2008 if you had your own store bought cd music on them) it would be nice to know where NZ stands on this.

The cydia store is a legit store to obtain apps albeit unsupported by apple. as you mentioned MyWi ; My3g and Firewall IP are also apps that can be purchased and legitimately owned.

As for a cheap iPad, check back with me in Feb next year as I will be getting the next one. lol. Chances are I'll keep it tho, makes a great (expensive) photo frame

Same here, I'm definitely getting the next ipad unless they shrink it. I'll be keeping my old one though as well.

I used mywi for four days (on trial) while on a recent trip to use my iPad and it worked brilliantly well. I kept the phone plugged in while using it though because it does burn through some power. Like you, I actually prefer not to JB and have since reset the phone back to unJB (just too much hassle to keep jbing it every time a new OS comes out)

Steve have explicitly said NO to the 7" iPad. It will not happen in the immediate future. It is way too small to be productive to use them. Any task that requires a smaller screen size than the current iPad can be done on the iTouch/iPhone.

Apple is not out there to satisfy all markets. Just the segment that makes them profitable.

Most people will think that you can put out the same performance of the current iPad on a 7" form factor but this is not possible at this stage due to technology/economic restrictions.

Therefore delivering a sub standard performance portable device will compromise on the user experience such as battery life etc. Also developers have to adjust with the difference in screen resolutions.
