Recently I've started wondering whether I'm the only person who is starting to get irritated by random crashes of many different third party iOS apps. Anecdotally I estimate that at least a quarter of the apps that I have downloaded suffer from stability issues of sufficient magnitude to seriously affect the usability of the app.

Apple is often criticised for their ring fenced approach to the iOS platform. Their defence is that controlling the distribution of third party apps provides a central point of purchasing and a degree of quality control that ultimately enhances the end user experience. I personally empathise with that philosophy, but it's disappointing that the quality control clearly isn't working as well as it should. At this point in time it feels as if Apple's process of reviewing and testing of apps before letting them loose on the App Store is setting an expectation of quality that's just not being delivered.

I believe that the iPhone and iPad are fantastic when used with their original out-of-the-box apps, but to me the entire platform is starting to feel somewhat hit and miss when it comes to third party apps and this is something that Apple needs to address if they are to retain their lead in this product segment.

Agree they're not as stable as they once were.

What apps are crashing on you? Out of the 70 or so apps on mine, only one had a stability problem which was fixed in a recent update. A quarter seems quite high.

I have a blog app that reliably crashes when ... you guessed it, you create an entry.

Many more with such bugs that make them utterly useless.

These are the problematic ones that spring to mind:
 - Home Budget : Random crashes.
 - Wellibus : Random crashes (admittedly not for a while so a recent update may have fixed the problem).
 - Subway : Worked fine until a recent update after which it crashes on startup while displaying the splash screen.
 - North and South Magazine : Worked fine for several editions of the magazine, but when attempting to download the December edition it allows the purchase to proceed (i.e. it takes my money) and then crashes when compiling the magazine edition, rendering the entire app unusable as it returns to this unrecoverable screen every time it is re-started.

Out of those four, the latter is obviously the one that's of most concern to me as it allows an in-app purchase but fails to deliver on the purchase. The vendor doesn't seem to want to know, so it will be very interesting to see what sort of response i get when I log a complaint with Apple.

To be fair there are plenty of apps which work brilliantly, but the hit-and-miss nature of apps in general makes me reluctant to spend money on them.

I have only one app that reliably crashes, and it is tvGuide. (iPad, 4.2.1).
It will reliably 100% of the time, crash upon being first opened.
Then subsequent openings will be fine.

I have 119 apps in total on my iPad, any get only very infrequent crashes.
Reeder occasionally craps out, but only on some specific posts (usually from thedailywh.at).

Otherwise I find it to be pretty stable.

Cheers,
Joseph.

I've had a few apps crash on me but not one as serious as TS's North and South Magazine app and the fact that they even don't bother to help makes me want to encourage you to log a complain to Apple.

As an update to this particular issue, I have just received a helpful response from ACP Media who have acknowledged the problem, confirmed that it will be resolved in an app update due in a few weeks, and offered me a gesture of goodwill for the hassle. Good work.
