As expected, I got my iPhone 4 from Hong Kong by a friend and he is kind enough helping me to ship to NZ. The phone just arrived before Christmas and I have been using it for a few days. Couldn't be happier since.

However, I do have one problem about the phone, while I am talking on the phone, sometimes my ear or my face was accidentally touch those on screen buttons (speaker, mute, contacts... etc), is there any way(s) I can avoid it? Thanks!

Don't let your ear touch the screen or use the headset

I thought it was meant to auto-shut off the screen when the proximity sensor detected your face? Has it got the latest firmware? This was a bug in the older firmwares wasn't it?

Yes, actually the screen goes "black" once the call was established and was being put on my ear, but for some reasons, the call was mute and the other side just couldn't hear me accidentally, and I found I have "touch" the button.

Since the phone was come with 4.1 showing in iTunes, I'll try to upgrade to 4.2.1 to see how it goes to see if it is a software or hardware problem.

Thanks anyway.

honestly why even bother replying?

this problem effects alot of iPhones4 the proxomity sensor does not work properly since they were released, and the "fix" apple released did not fix the problem for alot of people

If the 4.2.1 fix doesnt fix it for you, return it and hope you dont get another phone that does the same, or jailbreak it and install an app which locks the screen when your on a call.

But you're in the business which sells phones, and you should know that if someone buys something as expensive as an iPhone, you would expect that it should be free from defects like this. The customer shouldn't have to adjust to suit the wants of a broken phone. How can you listen to the call without the ear touching the phone? The headpiece thing that the sound comes out of during a call is like a CM away from the screen. Its not logical to keep your ear off it.

I think you should take johnr's comment in the context of Steve Jobs' comment when he said "don't hold it that way" when asked by people about how holding it in a certain way caused the reception to drop.

It's just tongue-in-cheek people!

Mine is the other way around... When I take the phone away from my face, sometimes it "forgets" to turn the screen back on.

It really does sound like a faulty proximity sensor or software issue. Normally the iPhone will disable the touchscreen when the proximity sensor is triggered.

If a straight update doesn't work, try booting to DFU mode and then restore to the latest software.

If it still happens I'd say you have a hardware problem.
