My wife wants to buy me an iPhone for my birthday, which is next week. The catch is that we are still recovering fiscally from the silly season, so this purchase will be at a later date in the not too distant future. As a result, I was thinking of getting her to get me a replacement back for my pending iPhone as a suitable gift to give me on the day (her requirement, not mine :-)). I've found an awesome Porsche one which is perfect for this future Porsche owner (I hope :-D).

My concern with this is the reports of the new pentalobe screws that are appearing on iPhones around the world. Has anyone purchased one recently from the Apple store (or outright from a bricks and mortar store), and can confirm whether these new screws are now being fitted.

Also, does anyone know of any low cost ways to get around the issue if I do get an iPhone with pentalobe screws? I did find these iPhone Liberation kits which look like they should do the trick, but I'm interested if others have found cheaper solutions.

I've bought one of these http://tinyurl.com/4shxhzc   I'm not sure if it works or not as I haven't received it, but for the price, I'm willing to take a punt. I still have the old philips screws on mine, but thought I'd get one of these for possible future use.

They also have a porsche iPhone 4 back.

ps I'm sure I saw on this site somewhere that they're not shipping until the 13th due to Chinese new year...other items being shipped from China have similar delays.

oh and happy birthday for next week :)

Thanks for the confirmation. All evidence would tend to suggest that this would now be the case. So I now need to decided the best way to deal with this (or if I want to deal with it at all :-)). Currently leaning towards the website suggested by Dreamy.

Its not the same but there is a version of TORX bits with 5 points not 6 called TORX+. may be an option. i know the bits are expensive ($30ish per bit) we have some at work but not that small.

my iphone still has the philips screws. anyone else's a little rounded off? im not sure if someone slipped doing it up or it was intentional

Well, I unexpectedly received an iPhone today for my birthday (much earlier than anticipated, and the 32GB model! :-D). The good news is that it has standard phillips screws, so this is a non-issue for me :-)

I don't care, but that was my wife's first comment. After all it has the same warranty and protections under the CGA. It should also make replacing the back a less risky affair than the approach I thought I'd be taking :-)
