Hi there
I downloaded the Google Translate app this morning. It wasn't easy to download, I had to go through a link off googlemobile blogspot in the end....wasn't showing up in the iphone app store.

Anyway, it seems to be suffering from the same problem as voice search in the google mobile app, i.e. not working . in this case "Speech recognition not available"

Do you think this is a "being on a New Zealand server" issue? I made a USA itunes account a while back so I could get Dragon Dictate on my iphone, I used this account to download the google translate app. Maybe it's some internal clash when it sees a north american itunes account but then hits  a new zealand server? or whatever, dont flame my technical sub-par-ness :)

this would be an excellent app at school for me. I have 8 different nationalities in one of my maths classes and thsi would be great for translating on the fly.

Anyway, any ideas on what might sort this out
Cheers
Pete

I think it is a issue with Vodafone blocking a port.

Google voice search in the Google app doesn't work for me either along with voice in the new Translate app.

Voice search does work on Telecom and Wifi.

I have seen a forum post on a UK forum for the same issue with Vodafone UK, in that case a Vodafone employee on the forum fixed the issue.

I had no problems.

Ran up the app store add, searched for google translate and 10 seconds later was happily speaking english into it and hearing it repeat the french back.

Running on an iPhone 4 with 4.2.1 on vodafone.

hmmm...that's strange. Why would it work for you? I am also on Vodafone, but I am using a 3GS. I hope it's not a 3GS thing.

I tried it again this afternoon and it failed...

It took me a while to realise the difference...

The first time I was in range of a WIFI hotspot.

So I can not do it other 3G either.

I tried again when I got home. It only works on wifi, not at all (including voice search) over 3g or GPRS. So does that mean VF is not letting it through or some such thing?

Google Translate works on Telecom 3G. Typical vodafone, they were advertising dragon dictate on their NZ website recently as a 'favourite' app, despite it being unavailable in the NZ App store...

Ok. So if I want to mention it to VF do I make a post on the VF forum? Ring the help desk (prob not)? Any suggestions?

This is not an Apple issue and not related to any blocked ports on the Vodafone NZ network,

But looks like it is related to an issue I am working on right now

If only you could fix up the patch coverage in many of the areas I work, live, and play!

I'm only half kidding Cool

But seriously your dedication is something even the harshest critic has to admire.
