I have an iPhone with a data plan and want to stay in touch with someone with an iPhone without a data plan. The iPhone without a data plan pretty much always has WiFi though.

Email is ok but slow because "Push" with Yahoo doesn't actually work (even though some users here say it does, it seems that the web is full of reports of people complaining that Yahoo! doesn't actually push as advertised to iPhone's Mail App).

TXTs are getting costly but are more instant - the other advantage of TXT is that you get a decent volume SMS alert tone. The "New Mail" tone is bloody pathetic!!

Anyway is there any App that will allow instant messenging? IM+ and Skype both are pretty cumbersome to use for this purpose, not to mention the drain on battery if left signed in. IM+ doesn't even seem to keep connections after you jump out of it even though it says it will.

Thanks :)

Whatsapp looks great! Thanks John!

Mauricio Viber says SMS not yet supported? But coming though.

Has anyone got any personal experience with whatsapp or viber?

I'm a little reluctant to divulge my mobile number to these 3rd parties but I guess that's the cost...

I have both, and PingChat too which is similar to WhatsApp. Well worth getting, I hardly use any SMS anymore as use these apps instead as just about everyone I know had an iPhone too. You can't complain about a free app that gives you free international messaging :-)

Viber is interesting. Can I hold off until the expected SMS update in "February"? The thought of a single App that does the "Skype" calling AND messenging between devices is very appealing!

Any current Viber users?

I've got both, looking forward to Viber adding messagibg support soon.

Viber themselves have been quite active in the Viber thread here on GZ which impresses me.
