Hi. I have looked into what the ipad2 has to offer over the first generation ipad, and am not convinced it is worth the extra $. Is anyone aware of retailers still stocking the origianl ipads at the discounted prices?
Thanks

Apple tell retailers to pull all stock and return it so I doubt you'll find any now.

The online apple store is selling refurbished (sold and returned) ones at a fairly good discount.  http://store.apple.com/nz/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad

You are right that it doesn't have much advantage...yet. The next versions of iOS may however be more resource intensive and require that graphics chip. You should also take into account that future  iOS updates for the first version will cease before the second version, based on what has happened in the past.   So if you are like me, and only got 1 1/2 years of iOS updates before they stopped, becuase I purchased my ipod touch about 4 months before the next version was released. If I had waited 4 months and got the newer version I would still be getting those updates, and would also have a better and faster spec unit. Therefore I would personally pay a couple of hundred premium to get that new version over the old one.

That sucks for the retailers. I am sure they could have possibily  sold out of those too, to many of those who missed out. I had noticed that all the demo units had been pulled.

I would just wait for what the next few months has to offer, such as Android Honeycomb + WebOS + the Blackberry Playbook. The iPad is just a name, it doesn't do anything "Special" which the other ones can't do far better. Plus, you are paying through the roof for it.

I did a wee writeup here explaining it all, http://www.murfy.co.nz/?p=531

I see that www.wireddog.com still have gen 1's listed, so you could try there (unless they just haven't updated their website yet). Also there are plenty on Trademe if you don't mind a second hand unit. You'll save even more that way too.

Thanks for all the feedback. I should have made the decision earlier, as many retailers had great offers pre the ipad2 release (JB Hi-Fi $579!). Noel Lemmings still has a few original ipads at good prices, with a cover thrown in (but the 16GB Wifi ones had all gone).
I am following the Android Honeycomb news, and maybe the wait for new ipad2 stock may be long enough for a better alternative to be realeased.

You do know that the price for iPad2 is the same as it was for iPad1, in some cases cheaper as well... By all mean, go for iPad2 for future iOS releases.

My experiece came from iPod Touch 1st Gen that I have had for 4 years and finally I was ready to "retire" it when iOS 4 came and with no support what-so-ever. I put up with limitation during iOS3...

Have you seen the US pricing for the Motorola Xoom? The iPad is actually cheaper (and a much better product).

There's a reason Android tablets haven't taken off.

+1 so true, after seeing the pricing for Xoom and galaxy tablet, I have decided iPad is probably a more affordable tablet
And since I don't care about camera, I bought iPad one on thursday, just before the iPad two launch.
But I might switch back to android in a year or two when the price is more affordable, just love how you can customize everything and the freedom in android.
