So it looks like Apple has announced that iOS5 and iCloud will be announced at WWDC.

Very strange turn of events that they have gone public with information prior to the actual event.

New marketing strategy? Trying to distract from Computex? Maybe both :-)

Seems odd though, it's not as if their previous tactics weren't working for them... and they've never seemed to care much about other events - judging by their pulling out of MacWorld.  I wonder if this is a management initiative, or a board one.

I believe this year is different since the word went out that there would be no new iPhone model announced at WWDC. They still wanted the press to pay attention so formalising other big news from mere rumours was a good move imo.

The press will always pay attention to what Apple is up to....the rumour mill keeps a lot of these "journalists" and sites in business...the actual events are like their Mecca for page hits.

I agree. But not having an iPhone announcement is a big dissapointment for many people\journalists. Knowing (ie: has been confirmed) that we'll finally hear about iCloud is almost as big.

It's all about degrees of hype I guess. This is still going to be big AND it doesn't involve new hardware. Replacing one hype topic with another I see as being important to Apple.

Says who? You're making a very big assumption if you think that what is stated in Apple's press release is all they will be talking about. I've read all the rumour and speculation about no new iPhone being announced, but it's important to remember that that is exactly what it is: rumour and speculation.

Sure they may not announce one, but with Apple, don't automatically believe everything you read beforehand until it comes (or doesn't) out of Steve's mouth.

From what I have seen briefly I have a couple of thoughts:

Computex is on right now and MS was going to speak on Windows Next/8 (so the rumour mill goes) - great way to steal their thunder

Eric Schmidt is speaking in the next few hours - negate any google announcements

iWork for iphone got announced today - obviously no room in the keynote for this

10.6.8 got released today too

icloud got outed and so did ios5 makes me think that either:

Apple PR screwed up (very unlikely)

icloud, lion and ios5 are big changes so their existence isn't the main show the detail of features will be.

Definitely not. But we'll see who can say 'told you so' on the day ;-)

My 2 cents worth.

Android is a big competitor. Open source, customisation and all that.

I feel that by staggering announcemnets of iCloud, iOS5 and iPhone5 they will gather hype, and stretch it out. I reckon iOS5 will allow more customisation of the interface so as to minimise that feature difference that so many droid fanboys like, and any other droid only functions that will narrow the points of difference gap.

Be interesting

I read briefly somewhere that Samsung are trying to get their hands on a next gen iPhone due to some copyright arguments... Maybe Apple are scared of leaks because of this, and decided to announce it themselves?
