Well I've finally bought myself an iPad 2 and I must say I am extremely impressed with it. I've played around and tested quite a bit of tablets. As far as I can tell, the iPad 2 is by far superior. Even compared to the Acer Iconia A500 Android HoneyComb 3.0 tablet.

But I am new to Apple products so I have a few questions,

Can someone tell me a brief explanation of the advantages of Jailbreaking my iPad2?

I've got a one year Apple warranty with it, will jailbreaking void that warranty?

What are some of your favorite, recommended and must have apps on the iPad 2?

Thanks guys.

No real benefit to jailbreaking an iPad save to install unsigned software. For me it's a more attractive prospect for the iPhone, not the iPad. And with the next version of iOS just around the corner there's even less reason to jailbreak at all.

Jailbreaking won't "void" the warranty per se, but if it breaks and you bring it in for repair with the jailbroken OS you'll get turned away. So you have to choose wisely. You want to be able to restore back to default official OS before taking it to be serviced. It's 50/50 whether you'll be able to do that depending on the fault.

Must haves are: iBooks, Kindle, Marvel, DC Comics, Flipboard, Words with Friends HD, Reeder, DisplayPad and Plants vs Zombies to name a few.

Don't worry. You can't JB an iPad2 yet.. and like Gehenna said, no real reason. Though one thing I do like to see working with iPad2 (if JB can achieve this) is real SMS app for sending and receiving TXT.

I've come across a really cool app for Augmented Reality called "String" made for iOS devices.

You can see more about it here : http://www.poweredbystring.com

As jailbreaking has been made legal Apple have no right to deny you hardware warranties if you jailbreak.

As for the person who said there was no benefits to jailbreak an iPad...

  • FriendlySMS - Text like an iPhone through your SIM card (3G Models)

  • MobileNotifier - Like the iOS5 notification tray, just more advanced (for now..)

  • SBSettings - Rapidly alter settings from any screen (Airplane Mode, Bluetooth etc)

  • Themes - Alter the actual look of the iPad

  • Video Wallpapers (i like the plasma ones)

  • Full Force - make iPhone apps scale natively without that stupid 2x zoom

  • Wi-Fi sync

Basically there is plenty to gain and very little to loose

If you like making your own apps you can also install them without a developer license (i made one that said hello world and satisfied my inner nerd. Do the world a favor and don't use illegal apps though!

Swirly SMS free will also allow you to text with a jail broken 3G iPad. Its free to download as the name suggests - I cant see the point in the paid version as the free one works perfectly.

iFile is another great jailbreak app that allows you to browse the iPad file system like Explorer. Also allows you to plug ina usb drive and use it like on a PC to upload and download files to your iPad.

There's heaps of other cool stuff and I have the following installed on my iPad 1:

Dislpayout for VGA
BTstack keyboard and mouse
Insomnia to keep keyboard and mouse alive when sleeping
MXTube to download YouTube videos
SBSettings date and clock etc
SBsettings VPN toggle
SBsettings Tetherme Toggle
Fullforce to maximise iPhone apps on iPad screen
Activator for keyboard association
Notifier/Reminder shows email icon near clock
PrivaCy to opt out of app tracking
SwirlySMS Free - send texts on ipad
iFile for USB transfer etc
Safari download manager
TetherMe

Jailbreaking is
