I am wanting to use a mic'd 3rd party headset with my iphone 3gs, however the connector/adapter that is supplied doesn't seem to work. I can hear the person that is calling but I can't speak to them?

After doing a little bit of research I have discovered that i may need a "special" adapter, infact an Apple iphone TTY adapter http://store.apple.com/nz/product/MA854G/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOQ&mco=MTA4NDc5Nzc#overview This looks exactly the same as the cable i currently have, so i'm a little confused as to why it doesn't work..... 

Any ideas? I don't fancy spending $36 on something that'll cost me 2 bucks anywhere else!!
