Fellow geekers,

This will be trivial for most of you, but after a hard week at work my brain has stopped functioning....

I'm trying to set up my iphone 4 so I can print over my wireless home network.

My printer is connected to a pc on my network that is always up and is homegrouped with the rest of my win 7 pc's, i.e. it can be accessed via \\printPC\BrotherMFC-7420USBPrinter

When connected to my wifi network i select print from the iphone, in the print settings screen it can't detect my printer.... which is where i'm stuck.

I'm assumming I can acheive this without downloading an app from the appstore, but if I do need one which one do you recommend?

Cheers

You need to look for an AirPrint application for the PC. It uses the bonjour service (installed as part of itunes) and makes the printer show up on the network. The PC has to be running though. http://www.aramistech.com/tips-tricks/enable-airprint-in-windows-and-use-any-printer/

Also does brother have an iphone app? Some manufacturers do now (canon does, epson does I think), this is different to the air print on HP printers which is a direct wireless connection.

Cheers for the link mate, worked perfectly.   Will look in to the brother app as well, however the airprint solution was the one I was after.

There certainly wasn't a Brother app compatible with my MFC-5440 so I use the airprint option that you have now for printing from iPad. Just be aware the print appears to be WYSIWYG, so if the page has a coloured backgound that is what will be printed (websites mainly).
