I use an android but wife has iphone 4. Wanted to put a song into it. I was used to the previous itunes so i did what i thought i should have done:

plug phone in.

added the song to itunes library.

clicked on phone, clicked on music, clicked on sync music, clicked apply.

top action screen shows 7 steps ... prepare to back up, backing up - i didn't want to wait for it to back up 10gb of stuff so clicked the 'X' ... and then it didn't seem to do very much so i browsed the phone and shockingly the folders were empty! at that time the top action screen shows transferring purchases ... clicked X just prior to looking at the phone ...

now half the iphone music is greyed out, no more apps, thankfully photos still there.
but the itunes shows that phone data usage hasnt changed. still got 4gb apps.

i disconnected it and now has no idea what to do.

any ideas? (yeah i can painstakingly install the apps one by one i guess)

yeah i thought that was the only way forward.

resynced and itunes cleverly solved the problem - complete the deletion of all apps and now the free space is correctly shown as 11GB free and all apps gone. nothing important thankfully - apart from saved games of angry birds original and fragger which i've stopped playing ...

won't have that problem with my galaxy s2 hrrmph

With iphone selected in itunes, choose 'summary' then tick 'manually manage music and videos' - apply.

Then back up to music and drag and drop songs to the iphone. Works wirelessly as well if you have 'sync with this iphone over wi-fi' ticked.

We are a multiple iOS device household, and we use playlists to sync media with our devices. You can configure iTunes to sync one or more playlists to your iPhone. Adding new content to your iPhone should then be a simple case of adding it to the playlist, and performing a manual sync. And with the new wifi sync features in iOS 5, this can all be done without having to connect your phone to your computer.

If they are songs/apps you've purchased through iTunes you can redownload them again in iTunes.

Start iTunes
Check out the menu of 'Quick Links' on the right, and click on Purchased.
It will bring up a list of songs/apps/books that you may download again.
