I wonder if anyone can help me - my sister has an iPad2 which is running the last iOS4 version of software. She's just got a new PC running Windows 7 (new as in bought last week). She's downloaded iTunes and is attempting to update to iOS5 - unfortunately she's had a time out (after 3 hours) on what was stated to be a 29 hour download.

Unfortunately, she's in Hastings and I'm in Wellington!

Also unfortunately (for her) I run Mac computers so don't really know where & what to check on hers.

Even more unfortunately, the after sales service people from Computer Connection where the computer comes from seem to be of little help.

She's on a Telecom broadband plan.
She can't tell me the specs of her new computer either.

Can someone tell me what she should do or be checking (at a 'dummies' level) to sort this problem out.

(Or is there someone from Hastings/Napier who is clued up enough to actually go sort it out for them!)

Thanks

If the iPad is under 90 days old she should be able to get free apple icare by calling 00800 7666 7666

Hi, only points I can make, she will have to restart the iOS5 upgrade, but before hand ensure she has the lattest version of iTunes, I will assume this is the case as she would have been notified otherwise.

I have helped with several cases of timeouts with ipad/iphone updates to iOS5, only real thing you can do to my knowledge is restart the update. She may need to delete any apps she has loaded, they can be reloaded post he update.

Also, best thing for her to do would be to choose 'Download Only' when iTunes tells her an update is available, then she doesn't have to leave the iPad plugged in for the whole time.

Sometimes the download times out, I don't think it is a PC issue, more an internet connection issue. If she wants to pay, I'm sure some of the IT support companies down there will have the update already downloaded which they could copy to her PC and run the update. iOS5 is definitely worth upgrading to.

That seems pretty slow for an iOS update to download. Is she capped ?

Also, since the updates use a CDN, her dns settings should be checked to confirm they are correct telecom ones so local servers are used

You can download the updates out of iTunes if required,
This page has a list of all iOS updates:
http://www.idownloadblog.com/iphone-downloads/
Download correct one, open iTunes and hold shift then click restore. It will prompt you for the file
( it has to be a restore when going to ios5 so make sure she has a current backup to restore when complete)

Just checking back in - she's done the restart of the computer & the download and managed to get it all in less than an hour - phew! She's a bit vague on her data plan etc from Telecom but maybe it was throttled as well...
