Just received:

Telecom offers sharper iPhone deals

Telecom today announced a range of cheaper deals on selected iPhones and plans, making these world-class devices even more affordable for New Zealanders.

“We have been delighted with the huge response to our iPhone launch,” said Telecom Chief Marketing Officer Jason Paris.

“So we’ve sharpened our pencils, built on our successful $0 Smartphone offers and made it even better value to experience the iPhone on our XT Smartphone Network.”

From 1 February, customers signing up for 24 months on $80, $100 or $120 plans will pay up to $50 less up-front on selected iPhone models.

At the same time, we’ve decreased the subsidy on the 4S 64GB $140 iPhone plan by $49. All other iPhone pricing remains unchanged.

New pricing is below and applies from 01 February 2012.

$80 iPhone 4S 16GB plan is good value for money.

$80 * 24 months + $99 upfront cost = $2019
iPhone 4S cost on it's own = $1029

You are paying $990 for 2 years which is $41.25/month for 200 minutes, 1GB data and 300 texts.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Am I reading this right? Is that $550 less than Vodafone (on a similar plan) for the 4S on the Telecom $80 plan?

Yes. Also, Telecom's plan includes 1GB of data permanently, not just for the first six months like Vodafone (who give you a measly 250MB after 6 months, unless you stump up an extra $20/month).

I get the impression VF aren't all that keen on selling iPhones.
If you talk to a salesperson at a store (I have probably talked to about 5) they will discourage you from buying an iPhone saying that phones like the SII etc are much better.
I guess there is no money for VF in the iPhone (ie Margin), but surely they make that back in running costs...

Out of interest, what do you mean by "poor radio performance"? I'm in a low coverage area (a valley) and my 4S has the best signal of any phone I've had (worst was HTC Nexus One).

Edit: I'm with Telecom; apologies if the performance is a Vodafone-specific issue.

I travel far and wide in god-zone and when accompanying other members of my team I am astounded that reception is often an issue with iPhone users on VF, but not anyone else. Friends with iPhones on TC have no such issues (I get 1 bar in the central city while they get 5 standing right next to me!). Sad but definitely true IMO.

I have always been told by 'people who should be in the know' that the iPhone has consistently operated better and are more stable on the TC network in NZ anyway. I am just pleased they finally have them and are now ahead with pricing.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Yes the 4S and the 4. No difference IME. Shame as they are a really cool piece of kit otherwise. Lets see what happens (and what network) gets the true iPhone5 when it comes out in a few months :-) he he

Although having said that, my 4S makes my work desk phone sound like a Geiger counter if I sit it too close, whereas my older Telecom WCDMA phones didn't do that...

That's because your handset is working in both 2G and 3G - even while connected to 3G it will scan around for 2G - GSM causes the interference, while WCDMA does not.

If you are using a handset on Telecom XT, always set it to "3G only" - will help save a bit of battery.

Reception for me on iPhone 3G was very bad where I am.
Switched to Telecom recently and brought my number with me, and now it is great.

I think you'll get more of that noise over speakers and flatter battery when you're in a poor service area because the phone is always trying to find a signal. Used to go flat so fast for me on VF.

Switched to Telecom recently and brought my number with me, and now it is great.

iPhone 3G/3GS will get 3G reception nationwide on Telecom but only in the bigger cities on Vodafone as the pre-iPh4 models don't support 900MHz 3G (which is what Vodafone uses outside the big cities).
