ESN is usually used with CDMA phones

A bad ESM sounds like to me that it is refering to the IEMI number which identifies each cell phone.

Now if it's "bad" it means one of 2 things,

1) the phone IEMI has been hacked to give it another IEMI (insert your reason for this here??)
2) the IEMI has been blacklisted (again insert your reason here)

Typically  if the IEMI is invalid then it won't work on Vodafone, same for telecom

As above. Bad ESN sounds like a CDMA iPhone (Sprint/Verizon), so this is of no use at all in New Zealand.

PS: Moved to correct forum, as this is not a Vodafone problem.

Could be referring to if the ESN is blocked if for example it was Lost / Stolen.
In that case, steer clear!

Edit, to make things clear:

Some iPhones will work on a GSM network assuming that part of them is unlocked since they are dual CDMA and GSM devices, if the ESN has been blocked it's likely the IMEI has too..

This is a small portion of them, since most iPhones sold in the states are locked with the carriers, if the said carrier is a CDMA one then the iPhone will only work with their "roaming" sim. If the customer has got the iPhone unlocked by the carrier then they /should/ be able to be used with any sim.
