Hello

I recently got a second hand PC for my son - and we are after one small screw to fix the wifi / NVME SSD card to the board. I went to PB Tech where it was originally purchased they told me to go to hardware store or Jaycar which I thought was terrible service.

I am sure they have many screws around in their store. I am taking a whole PC to hardware shop just to find a screw that fits.

Can anyone help?

I know I should know where “I” live but a city/town would be helpful.. I have one I’m sure but..

problem is there is no real standard size. The motherboard usually comes with them, and a few brands include them with their M.2 devices.

They probably dont have a pile sitting round. Jaycar or hardware store is appropriate advice.

FYI its normally a M2 and 2 to 4mm

It's a standard width and usually 2mm, any length under 4mm should fit.

I took a little screw out of my son's old toys - and it fits fine, probably just a little too long at about 5-6mm.

Ordered PC screw set from Aliexpress and see which one fits perfectly. Given that we will hold on to the PC for a while - it will come in handy or share with others who are short.

What really lacked with the PB Tech experience is that,

1) the PC was purchased from them

2) I did buy at least another grand worth of parts

3) I asked very nicely with my wifi card in hand that I took from home; if there are any screws from Gibabyte motherboard that may be hanging around or give me some guidance on size to which may fit. Answer was a straight no, we don't deal with that - but you can pay for your new parts you are buying. You should go to Jaycar or somewhere similar and look for a screw. Zero f'ing effort given to at least offer help. I think that's called shit service. If I was explained that yes the sizes vary, you may look into 1.9-3mm screws length should be less (M2-M3) I would have been cool with that - if you are working in a service industry and don't know yourself, at least have a courtesy to ask your colleague. I was happy to pay for the screws (maybe could have sold me M2, M2.5, and M3 screws).

My new Samsung SSD did not come with one unfortunately but there was one on motherboard.

I am not the bigget fan of PB Tech, I usually use them because they are in town and quick/cheap-ish.

However do people expect service from PB Tech?

I think of them like any other chain store i.e Noel Lemming, HN, The Warehouse etc.
The most I expect from staff is to sell me what I want, accept warranty issues, and hopefully not up-sell me on some sort of warranty.

Not trying to throw shade at the staff but I ain't going their for their support or service.
If the pre-built wasn't working, I expect them to replace/repair but if your adding a part yourself and not paying PB Tech to do it, even if you bought I pre-built....

Like I think their response is fair, I could be alone in this tho.

Did you ask at the service counter or the sales person?
I think any pc repair shop will / should have a container of “goodies”.

I was in a Bunnings store today so I had a look. The smallest screw carried was m3. I keep an ice cream container full of screws out of dead or obsolete equipment.

Thank you for checking. Hopefully AliExpress will deliver it quickly!

I have a few bit screws in a jar but not this small. Started disassembling some old toys but they are all smidgen too big.

I asked at the sales / order area. Not the check out side. I guess they are all the same. I think only counters they have was web order pick up and 2 sales area.

Ahh, I meant the desk/ area where they do builds and repairs.
Come to think of it, I’ve only seen it in one of the two branches in my area.

Anyone with a decent computer supply will have thousands of spare screws of various sizes. I would almost 99.99% guarentee the PBTech service desk at that store will have the piles of the screw you want lying around. Give the guy at the service desk a 4 pack of monsters and you'll get your screw ;)

I managed to order wifi chipset + antennas for 23 dollars from AliExpress. It came with two screws so I didn’t need to order the full screw set. If anyone is short of screws - happy to ship it out to you. This means that PB Tech should have plenty of screws hanging around when they are assembling parts (the factory wifi chipset supplies two).

I just think their service could be a little better.
