Thanks to everyone for checking - we've now heard back from the data recovery place to find out that there's physical damage to the drive platters and the data is essentially unrecoverable. BUGGER.

The good news is he is now practising good data protection practices - with a NAS with 2 drives in RAID 1, with an additional offsite backup drive, hopefully this won't happen again.
