Hi,

A good friend has lost some critical data when an external HDD failed. He's taken it to a data recovery place, and they need to source a donor drive of the following specs:

Western 2TB Digital 3.5”

MDL: WD20EARX

DCM: HHRNHTJMAB

Product of THAILAND

Am happy to pay for replacement brand new drive if you have a disk that matches these specs...

Is there a software method of checking the DCM? I have a WD20EARX, unsure if the DCM matches however.

Yeah, unfortunately it only appears to be on the HDD label - I haven't been able to find any software to query it.

shouldn't the data recovery place be taking care of this for him isn't that what you pay them for

they must be going to yoink the platters out and put them in the replacement drive or swap the controller board

I have two WD20EARX drives in my server, unfortunately the DCMs on them don't match yours. Sorry!

Checked mine too - does not match the DCM # you need.

This is kind of crazy that they need the exact same batch of disk drive to recover the data. I don't know anything about the process but it seems very flawed.

It is possible the recovery is only guaranteed if exact same batch controller. Can work with other batch boards, but not guaranteed and may end up screwing up the data (remote chance). For very critical data I'd say the company wants to do their best of not loosing any (more) data for the client, recover as much as possible.

Well considering the expense of this sort of thing and if it is vital to a company's business (why on earth it was not backed up I don't know) then the recovery company should have procedures in place to procure a specific drive. This is terrible service to put it onto the client. Spare no expense but give them the actual service.

And if it is personal data, let it go. It's not worth the money. I have lost heaps of things in the past, including years worth of invoices and Inland Revenue was quite obliging... There is always more data to replace it with.

Sorry, all three in my server have different DCM's. I feel the pain, I recently had to pay over $600 for a failed attempt to recover irreplaceable RAW files. I had backups of jpegs but it's not the same. Now I spare no expense in redundancy.
