If it's still Spring when I get there. Getting everything sorted out, packed up, and sold up is taking forever. A few more things to sell, including the house, and I am gone. How long that all takes is anyone's guess.

I know. We recently did all that - in the opposite direction.
Fly back next month to finalize the house sale, get payment, and do something with the houselot of stuff we left in storage..
At least you've got the exchange rate going in your direction, good $NZ-$CDN right now:)

If it comes to it, I'm sure your local Recycling Center would love to take any working tech you still have left? My local one is full of old tech that proves useful once in a while :-). And even the most ancient laptops don't sit on their shelves long.

They wanted $50 from me to recycle it. If nobody wants it then its going to the tip.

It's now just $5 to dispose of a laptop, according to here:-
http://www.pncc.govt.nz/services/rubbish-and-recycling/e-waste-recycling/

But I thought that was just for disposing of your non-functioning electronics anyway.

My local recycle center has a large 'ReUse' shop attached to it, full of all sorts of useful 'saved from landfill' stuff you can buy for a donation. It's really popular. Does Palmerston North not have anything like that?

Nope, nothing for recycling for reuse. Interesting that the page says $5. When I went to the recycling centre they were adamant that I needed to pay $50.  However, I guess I may have misinterpretted and that may have been the total price (laptop, printer, mouse, external CD/DVD).

I think it's totally rude of them to ask you to pay for them to recycle it as they will make money out of it by doing so

A bit like our dump here in Napier now asking us to pay to dump green waste when they sell it to Whirinaki mill for burning in their furnace for power generation so now they charge me and I just dump it in with the normal refuse

Actually the disposal price they charge is heavily subsidised :-).

I think the idea is that we should start to consider the cost of disposal of our tech as part of the cost buying/owning it.

You could always compost it instead - free disposal + free compost :-)

Perhaps we're getting a bit far off-topic now...
