Andib: Why not use an HDMI stick PC

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2GB-RAM-MEEGOPAD-T01-Mini-PC-TV-stick-Quad-Core-Intel-Atom-Z3735F-Windows-8-1/32299983115.html

Something like these would save on power and be as good if not better than an old PC in the same price range

Would they be as quick as a core 2 duo though. Not sure on how reliable those cheap chinese things are. Does it come with a legal COA for windows 8, becuase at that price you have to wonder. Can't see any details on the COA.

sep11guy: I agree, chromecast is giving me 50-50 results, as it sometimes works, sometimes buffers and it doesnt give a full solution to what needs to be done .

The chromecast is good for youtube, but whenever I want to use it, it seems to need rebooting, to get it reconnected to wifi.

I believe they come with "Windows with Bing" which is a free SKU for low cost devices. Pretty much standard Windows apart from the search defaulting to Bing.

The newer Atom CPUs are very close in performance to C2D, and lower TDP.

Raw GHz ceased being a reliable indicator of performance quite a while ago.

They don't need to, they perform more work per cycle.

Imho there have been hardware revisions. That said I use mine infrequently and it is powered only when needed.

I have got one that is only a couple of months old, and it suffers from reliability problems, so would not recommend it.

Everybody, my apologies for the delayed response. For some reason I have stopped receiving email notifications. I was wondering why there was so little activity, very unusual for GZ. I will sort through all these and reply to those that require it. Give me a little time, please.

ubergeeknz: I've an HP Pro small form factor, C2D 2Ghz, 2Gb DDR3, GTX 210, 320Gb WD Black, 250W PSU, Windows 7 Pro.  I'd need to confirm the exact model, if you're interested?

I would be interested if the price is right and it also has HDMI out. Everything else looks fine. I would like to know the model number so I can look it up. How much would you want? If you PM me and don't hear anything back, leave a note here in the forum. Something is funny with my notifications so I am not sure if it is also affecting my private messages.

Generally these older PCs will tend to have DVI or displayport out, so they probably don't carry the audio through the wire. So will likely have analogue audio out unless you install a digital sound card or it has optical audio out.Although I find analogue audio out ok for I use it for, which is mainly lightbox.

timmmay: Why does it need to be Windows? If it's just for streaming get the latest R.Pi, for $35 it's incredible value (plus $10 for a case, $10 for a USB PSU, $10 for a memory stick, for any items you don't have). I have the original one running XMBC and it does a good job, the newest version would be fantastic - quad core and I believe Windows 10 may run on it. It's small, silent and uses virtually no power. This software.

Thanks for the suggestion but for me this would be opening a can of worms. I have heard of Raspberry Pi but don't really know anything about it and for this project I want to stick with something familiar that I feel comfortable with. For me that is a Windows browser on a full-scale PC.

mattwnz: Heaps of exlease ones on trademe for $100 and under. I picked up a lenovo small form factor one, core 2 duo, 3GHz, and it runs off a 160w power block. Installed windows 10 on it, and it runs lightbox perfectly with no stuttering. Only has a 160GB drive in it, but these days the primary drive size doesn't matter, and you may want to put in an SSD.I probably wouldn't go below a core2duo 3GHz these days. i3s are next next step up, but you will likely be paying over the $100 mark

I have been looking on Trade Me and have seen such deals in the past but right now I can't seem to find what I want, hence me appeal here.
